Job Summary

This position is designed for a veterinary technician student to fulfill their Spring externship requirement. Working under the guidance of the Veterinarian, Veterinary Technician, and Animal Care Team, the student will contribute to providing professional medical services to help injured wildlife of DuPage County.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide routine and emergency care to a diverse range of wildlife species, including avian, mammal, and reptile, administering appropriate treatment.
  • Assist in medical, diagnostic, and surgical procedures to support the overall health and well-being of wildlife.
  • Collaborate in euthanasia and postmortem examinations when required.
  • Maintain accurate medical and procedural records.
  • Undertake husbandry duties, including cleaning and feeding.
  • Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits; Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and work procedures; Follow all safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of the District\'s safety and risk management program; Keep work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards; Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents.
  • Maintain a supportive working environment and demonstrate a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
  • Current enrollment with completion of the first year (1) of degree in Veterinary Technician Program (CVT) from an accredited institution.
  • Illinois professional veterinary licensure in good standing may be required.
  • Valid Driver\'s License in good standing.
  • Experience in observing, safely handling, restraining, and transporting birds, mammals, and reptiles preferred.
  • Knowledge of native and wild fauna identification.
  • Knowledge of basic veterinary techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and data.

Schedule:Position does not start until mid-March, 2025 and ends around mid-May, 2025. Four 10-hour days per week with one weekend day expected. Times and days may vary occasionally.

Pay:\$15-\$16 an hour.

Uniform:Scrub tops provided for the duration of the position, responsible for scrub bottoms/workwear pants and sturdy work shoes (preferably hiking boots or something similar).

Location:DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center at Willowbrook Forest Preserve.
