Hobart and William Smith Colleges Theatre Technical Assistant in Geneva, New York

Working closely with the Technical Director / Resident Designer and Theatre Department Chair, this

position assists with the technical theatre operations of McDonald Theatre in the Gearan Performing

Arts Center and Williams Studio Theatre including set construction, lighting, sound, and necessary

maintenance of equipment and theatre facilities. The Theatre Technical Assistant also supports the

Technical Director / Resident Designer in the supervision and mentoring of Stagecraft lab students and

student workers.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Train, supervise, and/or mentor Stagecraft lab students, student technical crews, and scene

    shop student workers.

  2. Assist with set construction and other design areas as needed for HWS Theatre productions.

  3. Train, supervise, and/or mentor THTR 900 Theatre Production students who are working on

    faculty-directed productions in technical theatre roles. This may include stage managers,

    assistant stage managers, light board operators, sound board operators, projections operators,

    run crew, etc.

  4. Attend technical and dress rehearsals, performances, and strikes for faculty-directed

    productions as needed.

  5. Assist with upkeep and basic maintenance of shop and theatre spaces.

  6. Provide technical support for additional Theatre Department events beyond the faculty-directed

    productions. Examples may include guest artist performances, works-in-progress events from

    Theatre classes, other special events in McDonald Theatre or Williams Studio.

    Other Information:

    The position is a part-time, 15-20 hours/week, 25 weeks/year, non-exempt position. Hours are

    generally in the mornings or afternoons but occasional work on evenings or weekends may be

    required. Pay rate range is $20.00/hr —$30.00/hr.

    • Associates or bachelor’s degree in Theatre or related field, or equivalent combination of

    education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of equipment

    used in a theatre scene shop and/or construc;on.

    • Prior training and/or experience in theatre technical production is preferred.

    • Experience in safely operating in a scene shop (or woodshop). This includes working with power

    tools, the ability to read and understand shop drawings, and knowledge of basic math skills

    required for measuring and cutting.

    • Commitment to scene shop safety protocols.

    • Willingness to be trained on equipment and procedures.

    • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings, as

    production needs dictate.

    • Ability to work well with others, especially unskilled students is essen;al.

    • Strong communication skills and willingness to take initiative.

    • Highly reliable, flexible, and adaptable.

    • Valid driver’s license, ability to lift 50 pounds, and comfortable working at safe heights.

    • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other

    cultures or backgrounds is required.

    • Familiarity with campus environments or similar educational settings is advantageous.
