Position Summary
HIGHLIGHTS
SUNY Geneseo is searching for a team member to become our next University Police Officer 1! As a University Police Officer 1, you will enforce all New York State and local laws, as well as the student code of conduct on the grounds of the State University of New York at Geneseo.
University Police Officers ( UPO 1) are charged with full police powers under Criminal Procedure Law, Section 1.20(34)(S), and are responsible for performing the full range of professional police duties.
As part of your regular duties, you will assist other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies with investigations, collect evidence, question witnesses or testify in court. UPO1s are actively involved in campus communities and activities, including educating community members on topics such as personal safety, risk awareness, crime prevention, alcohol/drug awareness, sexual assault prevention and other safety issues.
This position operates on a rotational shift including nights, weekends and holidays.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have permanent appointment in a University Police Officer 1 (UPO1), SG-14 classified position; OR be reachable for appointment on the current New York State Civil Service canvass list for SUNY Geneseo’s area location for the UPO1, SG-14; OR be eligible via transfer.
New York State Preferred List candidates have preference.
In addition to meeting one of these qualifications, prior to appointment, you’ll also need:
proof of completing the physical agility test
to meet theestablished physical and medical requirements (https://www.cs.ny.gov/ehs/standards/EHS%20PM-44.pdf) of the position
possession of a valid unrestricted New York State driver’s license
to be legally eligible to carry a firearm
to have completed all requirements for certification as a police officer in New York State

Function 1: Patrol Assigned Area
Patrol assigned area on foot, bicycle, patrol vehicle or other means to deter criminal activity by means of presence and witness or detect other dangerous situations (i.e. fire);
Respond to calls for service from fellow officers or members of the campus community to ensure that persons and property are adequately protected;
Respond to situations involving, but not restricted to: burglaries, robberies, theft, violations, fires and other unusual situations

Function 2: Regulate Pedestrian and Vehicular Traffic
Enforce vehicle and traffic laws to prevent dangerous situations from arising;
Direct traffic at intersections, crosswalks and other critical points during peak traffic periods;
Stop persons violating vehicle and traffic laws and issue warnings, tickets or summonses;
Patrol parking lots and campus roadways;
Ticket vehicles parked in violation of campus regulations;
Control the movement and activity of crowds at concerts, athletic events and other gatherings;
Staff entrance ways to prevent gate crashing and overcrowding of facilities during events and operate screening devices

Receive and interpret incoming communications including emails, telephone and radio calls from officers and community members;
Dispatch officers to the scenes of incidents and irregularities;
Issue temporary parking permits;
Utilize electronic devices to record and view information, such as computers, video cameras and voice recorders

Function 4: Provide Training & Education
Deliver a variety of in-service training and/or community educational programs;
Obtain and maintain certification in a variety of training areas such as defensive tactics, use of force or firearms instruction;

Provide training and education to University Police personnel, other law enforcement agencies, government personnel and the public;
Engage in crime prevention activities such as R.A.D. or alcohol awareness

Report to the scene of a crime, accident, or other disturbance to halt crimes in progress, arrest violators, maintain order, or arrange for appropriate care of injured persons;

Conduct initial investigations of incidents to preserve and gather evidence including interviewing witnesses, complainants and suspects, conferring with fellow officers to ascertain the nature and severity of the situation, reporting results of investigations to a supervisor or testifying in court
