EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in a science or business discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant
experience.
• Proven experience in business development, partnership management, or strategic alliances,
with a focus on startup support and commercialization in an academic, biotech, or
pharmaceutical environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in life sciences or physical science discipline preferred.

JOB SUMMARY
The Strategic Alliance and Business Development Manager will play a key role in expanding and
managing UTMB’s strategic partnerships with commercial licensees, including biotech startups, large
pharmaceutical companies, and not-for-profit organizations. This role is responsible for sustaining
existing alliances, implementing new partnerships, and driving business development initiatives to
advance UTMB’s intellectual property and innovation goals. Additionally, the Manager will support the
launch and growth of startup companies involving UTMB technologies, collaborating with internal and
external stakeholders to foster successful commercialization. The position also involves supporting
select University projects as directed by the Vice President for Innovation, working with UTMB leaders
to build strong industry relationships, particularly in the greater Houston area.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Manage and sustain strategic partnerships with commercial licensees of UTMB’s intellectual
property, including biotech startups, large pharmaceutical companies, and not-for-profit
organizations.
• Identify, establish, and manage new alliances to connect the Office of Innovation with potential
licensees and partners, fostering business development opportunities.
• Collaborate with the Office of Innovation and Technology Transfer to build and maintain
meaningful partnerships with investors, facilitating engagement and commercialization efforts
for UTMB’s technologies.
• Drive the launch and growth of startup companies involving UTMB technologies by partnering
with various internal and external stakeholders, providing strategic guidance and support to
foster successful ventures.
• Support the implementation of select University projects and programs as determined by the
Vice President for Innovation, aligning with institutional goals.
• Develop and execute strategies for partner engagement, including organizing and attending
meetings, events, and conferences to strengthen industry connections.
• Work closely with the Vice President for Innovation and the Executive Director of the Office of
Technology Transfer to build sustainable and measurable relationships with industry partners,
especially in the local and greater Houston areas.
• Provide insights and recommendations for optimizing UTMB’s intellectual property portfolio
through strategic partnerships and business development.

• Strong understanding of business development, partnership management, and startup
ecosystems within the biotech, life sciences, or pharmaceutical industries.
• Expertise in intellectual property management, licensing processes, and technology transfer.
• Proven ability to manage high-profile, multi-party collaborations and strategic alliances.
• Demonstrated customer relationship skills and the ability to negotiate with internal and external
business partners, fostering positive, sustainable relationships.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate
effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
• Exceptional relationship-building skills, with demonstrated success in engaging investors,
industry partners, and startup teams.
• Experience in developing and implementing strategies for launching and supporting the growth
of startup companies.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess partnership opportunities and make data-driven
decisions.
• Knowledge of regulatory and market dynamics in biotech and life sciences sectors.

Salary Range: Actual salary commensurate with experience or range if discussed and approved by hiring authority.
