Job Description:

The BSL2 laboratory manager plays a critical role overseeing and enhancing the management of BSL2 research resources. This role involves coordinating laboratory space allocation, managing shared equipment, ensuring services and maintenance contracts are in place and assisting with scheduling maintenance. A key responsibility is ensuring the seamless operation of BSL2 laboratories, with a strong focus on meeting the needs of Principal Investigators and Study Directors to support the timely execution of research projects. This position is crucial in providing researchers with the essential tools, technologies, and support needed to carry out cutting-edge biomedical research.

The BSL2 manager ensures appropriate personnel are trained and compliant in bloodborne pathogen exposure control plans, biomedical waste and chemical waste disposal, and BSL2 lab safety training, and enforces compliance with training and control plans. This position supervises the removal of bio-hazardous waste from BSL-2 areas for all EPI labs and ensures that faculty and staff are complying with EH&S outlined protocols for bio-waste disposal. The BSL2 manager provides routine review and mentorship of BSL2 lab managers to ensure labs are compliant with EH&S lab safety standards. This will include review of lab safety manuals, chemical storage methods, and chemical waste disposal.

This position shall develop and maintain a broad understanding of EPI’s operations to ensure a sufficient working knowledge of processes that impact BSL2 research operations. The BSL2 manager proactively seek improvements specific to databases/systems around lab management, with process optimization in mind. Lead the acquisition, maintenance, location and distribution of shared BSL2 research resources including scientific equipment, and equipment monitoring software and inventory databases, and technology platforms. Develop and implement strategies, operational policies and procedures to optimize BSL2 resource utilization and support the institute's overarching research goals.

Assist with BSL2 operations budget development for research resources, ensuring cost-effective procurement and allocation. Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and vendors to ensure timely and cost-effective procurement and scientific, equipment and software resources, including maintenance contract management and oversight. Manage, coordinate and conduct BSL2 research support and services including automated controls for PI requested equipment, service contracts, preventative maintenance, calibrations to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards. Plan and manage current research space needs and requests; assist with future BSL2 space projections. Implement efficient lab layouts and storage solutions.

Act as a concierge for all new and established EPI faculty and scientific staff to optimize research productivity. Serve as a liaison between faculty and scientific staff and EPI administration. Lead the onboarding process for new faculty, and offboarding process for exiting faculty with a specific focus on space assignments, lab set up/breakdown, and equipment review and placement. Develop and implement training programs for researchers on the use of resources and technologies, including equipment databases, lab inventory software. Manage accurate records of resource usage and prepare reports for senior management. Maintain regular communication with leaders regarding tasks and deadlines. Work collaboratively with other teams (Facilities, EH&S, etc.) to optimize management of research space.

Assists with the annual BSL3 lab maintenance shutdown. Duties include attending planning meetings, providing escort of vendors, PPD, and/or EH&S staff, ordering supplies required for maintenance, and participate in follow up review meetings to provide feedback to improve future shutdowns. The BSL2 manager will participate in on-call coverage for after hour’s emergencies for the EPI labs and facilities. The primary function is to troubleshoot building and equipment issues, and contact appropriate group (PPD, PI, or EH&S) to resolve. Provides loading dock coverage which includes receiving freight delivers, biowaste removal, and weekly laundry pick up/drop.

Salary commensurate with experience and expertise

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., biomedical sciences, business administration and two years of experience, appropriate college course work may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

An advanced degree in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biosafety, Immunology, Environmental Health or similar degree and at least five years of direct experience in a research laboratory preferred.
