MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience in a laboratory, biological sciences, or related field.

College or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.(Note: If education is being used to qualify for this position, youmustprovide a copy of an official or unofficial transcript as supporting documentation showing the required coursework.)

Possession of a valid Driver License.

JOB DUTIES:

This is a technical position responsible for assisting the Honey Bee Diagnostics Laboratory diagnose honey bee diseases and pests in support of the Apiary regulatory activities of the Division of Plant Industry and other industry stakeholders.

Diagnostic responsibilities: Receives, prepares, and processes honey bee and honeycomb samples as outlined by supervisor. Completes diagnostic assays for honey bee diseases and pests using the appropriate laboratory technique and equipment. Assists with making specialized bacterial and fungal media as necessary. Isolates and cultures disease-causing organisms from samples of honey bee material. Extracts nucleic acids from submitted samples and performs nucleic acid-based assays on extracted RNA/DNA. Manipulates honey bee samples for quantification of honey bee pest and pathogens using dissection and compound microscopes. Maintains quality control over all processing activities including sanitation during sample processing.

Data input and output procedures: Catalogues, assigns and uploads pertinent sample information into a local database. Compiles data from sample slips and diagnostic assays to construct finalized honey bee health reports. Prints reports from scientific databases; emails copies of reports and distributes to regional supervisors, apiary inspectors, and other interested individuals.

Laboratory support activities: Cooperates with other coworkers in sharing daily workload such as keeping the counter tops and sinks in good sanitary condition and washing glassware. Performs other duties, as necessary, to maintain orderly operations of laboratory procedures. Performs duties demonstrating professionalism and collegiality toward coworkers, apiary inspectors, and all others in performance of official business. Participates in regulatory honey bee pest and pathogen surveys as necessary, including onsite apiary visits and field work.

Periodic travel may be required to facilitate activities associated with current section, bureau or division duties. This may include travel associated with grant projects, farm bill and/or assisting with pest surveys, inspections, public outreach, and emergency programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES, INCLUDING UTILIZATION OF EQUIPMENT, REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of personal computing and word processing.

  • Skill in using centrifuges and balances.

  • Skill in laboratory techniques including nucleic acid extraction, organismal isolation, purification, and storage.

  • Ability to proficiently use laboratory pipettes.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to proficiently plan, organize and coordinate assigned work duties.

  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory procedures.

  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. and bend repetitiously.

  • Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, and humid environments.

  • Ability to walk on uneven ground and in inclement weather.
