The Opportunity

We are seeking a dynamicIndustrial and Systems Engineer for Quality and Patient Safetyto join the Quality and Patient Safety Initiative (QPSi) at the UF College of Medicine. In this pivotal role, you will lead AI-driven healthcare process improvement initiatives, integrating established industrial and systems engineering methods with novel AI tools to enhance patient safety and care quality. You’ll collaborate with clinicians, data scientists, and quality improvement experts to design and implement predictive models, discrete event simulations, and agent-based modeling, improving clinical decision-making and healthcare operations at UF Health. From managing quality improvement initiatives to leading pilot projects focused on adverse event prediction and prevention, you’ll guide projects from inception to completion while ensuring measurable advancements in patient safety. Reporting to the Executive Director of QPSi, you'll champion innovation, continuous improvement, and transformative healthcare solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and Manage AI-Driven Process Improvement Initiatives:Guide and oversee initiatives integrating AI into existing UF Health processes. Collaborate with data scientists and clinicians to design and implement AI predictive models, enhancing health system operations and clinical decision support. Supervise the entire project lifecycle, including defining scope, allocating resources, scheduling, initiating, designing, building, and deploying solutions to ensure successful project completion.

  • Collaborate with Biostatistics and AI Teams:Partner with biostatistics and AI teams to develop data-driven models of clinical operations. Utilize various frameworks to better understand and improve clinical care at UF Health. Develop and apply tools such as agent-based models, discrete event simulations, and reinforcement learning models as appropriate to understand and enhance clinical processes.

  • Contribute to Project Planning:Assist in creating detailed project plans, including milestones and work breakdown structures. Assign tasks to team members to ensure timely project completion according to specifications.

  • Report Results to Key Stakeholders:Prepare and present findings to key stakeholders, including executives, front-line clinicians, and quality improvement communities. Create presentations, analyses, and reports for leadership, program design reviews, and operational readiness reviews. Present findings at regional, national, and international conferences, ensuring transparency and effective communication throughout the project life cycle.

Expected Salary:

$110,000 – $125,000; commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

A Masters degree in appropriate area of specialization and four years of relevant experience in industrial or systems engineering, or a Bachelors degree in appropriate area of specialization and six years of relevant experience in industrial or systems engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 4 years of experience in healthcare-focused industrial or systems engineering roles.

  • Demonstrated business acumen and strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels, including leadership, trainees, and front-line clinical staff.

  • Proven experience in project planning and management, with a clear command of presenting and guiding teams.

  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and process optimization frameworks in healthcare setting

  • Working knowledge of process improvement methodologies, including Six Sigma, Lean, and Total Quality Management (TQM), with relevant certifications (Six Sigma Green/Black Belt preferred or interest in obtaining).
