General Summary

Under general supervision, perform maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and Medical-related plumbing systems. Maintain, troubleshoot and test plumbing systems; assemble, install and repair pumps, pipes, fittings and fixtures; cut, thread and weld gas pipes; assemble and install valves, pipe fittings and pipes; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspect related work performed by contractors; estimate cost, time and materials for plumbing projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of engineering shop; clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains, repairs and installs plumbing and related fixtures and components.

  • Repairs piping of various size and type.

  • Checks safety equipment and replaces components such as washers, gaskets and filters.

  • Inspects, repairs or replaces pumps, valves.

  • Install supports and hangers for pipe, fixtures and equipment.

  • Assemble and install valves and fittings.

  • Install, repair and maintain water treatment equipment, piping and controls.

  • Install, repair and maintain water heaters and conditioners. Including RO water and Water Softener Systems

  • Install, repair and maintain plumbing fixtures, appliances and trim.

  • Test pipe systems and fixtures for leaks.

  • Ensure all installations, repairs and maintenance meet the requirements of the appropriate codes.

  • Ensure all installations, repairs and maintenance meet environmental protection requirements.

  • Maintains appropriate service and repair records.

  • Researches, purchases and inventories equipment parts and supplies.

  • Responds to routine emergency calls for repairs and service.

  • Assists and serves as back up to other Facilities employees.

Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements

  • License or certificate required, or able to obtain

  • GED or High School Graduate

  • Experience working in an outdoor or indoor building environment

  • General knowledge of plumbing fixtures and ability to comprehend blueprints and drawings.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., squat, bend, stoop and kneel for short periods, climb a ladder, stand for long periods of time, constant arm extensions.

  • Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.

  • Must be able to pass a local background check
