The Work You Will Do:

OPS Park Ranger- 37979330

An opportunity for a self-motivated, hard-working individual to provide maintenance, visitor services, resource management, administration, and park protection. This OPS Park Ranger position will work 32 to 40 hours per week. The park is located three miles north of Leesburg in Fruitland Park and comprises some 620 acres of wetlands and uplands West of Lake Griffin. This is a full-service park, offering an excellent opportunity for an ambitious person to learn all that the Park Service has to offer.

Our park encompasses 620 acres and allows visitors to explore in several ways. Anglers or birders may want to rent a canoe or a kayak to explore Lake Griffin’s marshes. If you’re not sure paddling alone is for you, that’s OK, we offer guided canoe and kayak tours. If you’d enjoy a less vigorous type of exploration, Concessionaire "Epic Water boat Tours" offer guided pontoon boat tours.

The park boasts two hiking trails totaling two miles in length. Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to see several different habitats including swamp and sandhill. Animals commonly spotted in the park include racoons, bobcats, coyotes and even bears. Call the ranger station to inquire about the availability of guided hikes.

    Pay:

    $15.00 per hour-paid bi-weekly

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    VISITOR SERVICES - Explains facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment, and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions in an accurate and professional manner. Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations.

    RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - Recognizes biological communities and the natural processes required for their maintenance. Observes, maintains and protects the natural, cultural, historic and archaeological resources of the park, assists with maintains optimum species control via natural and chemical means.

    MAINTENANCE - Maintains Park structures, facilities, equipment and grounds through routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance practices. Conducts routine inspections to ensure proper maintenance standards are met. Maintains cleanliness of grounds and facilities. Cleans restrooms and park areas as directed.

    ADMINISTRATION - Prepares forms and reports. Answers telephone, operates park radio, computer, and various office equipment. Collects fees, operates cash register/point of sale system and reconciles receipts. Orders, sells and inventories resale merchandise

    PROTECTION - Performs routine patrols and security checks; ensures adherence to the Park Protection Plan. Opens and/or secures park facilities as appropriate. Interprets and enforces park rules pertaining to all natural and cultural resources and facilities and use thereof for the safety and enjoyment of the visitor. Responsible for security of cash fund.

    OTHER - Perform other related duties as required

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:

    • Knowledge of basic plumbing and electrical work

    Ability to:

    • Ability to maintain and clean all park facilities

    • Ability to maintain park grounds using standard ground keeping equipment.

    • Ability to work outdoors in all types of Florida weather

    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions/directions.

    • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

    • Ability to perform cash register/point of sale transactions.

    • Ability to participate in resource management tasks, including but not limited to prescribed fire preparation activities

    • Ability to interact with visitor inquiries in a tactful and courteous manner.

    • Ability to understand and apply rules, directives, policies, laws and regulations.

    • Ability to prepare reports.

    • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

    • Ability to lift 40 pounds

    • Must be able to maintain a valid State of Florida driver’s license

    • Ability to work a rotating schedule including holidays and weekends

    • Ability to operate vehicles including small trucks and UTVs

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Valid driver’s license

    • Successful completion of background/fingerprint check
