About this role:

Dow's Post Reactor Extrusion & Processing R&D group within Dow’s Packaging & Specialty Plastics division has an exciting opportunity for a Lead/Senior R&D Specialist located in Lake Jackson/Freeport, TX. The primary focus of this position includes leading lab scale compounding & extrusion process development across multiple businesses process, developing new process for product innovation, and supporting internal and external manufacturing trials. The successful candidate will drive technology development in plastic mechanical recycling area and support and lead new process development projects in collaboration with other Dow divisions within and outside of R&D function.

  • Supports the operation of extrusion and other R&D equipment in compliance with Dow’s EH&S standard. Ensure equipment maintained and operated at high level to support compounding & extrusion needs.

  • Define and conduct research and development efforts on compounding & extrusion projects in the lab or at external manufacturing assets using knowledge of scientific principles, theory and experimental design.

  • Develop lab/pilot plant/manufacturing process technologies for innovative products. Drive compounding process development for productivity improvement

  • Develop and implement technical solutions through hands-on experimentation/problem-solving for well-defined research problems.

  • Generates sound research data, interpretation of results, and data handling.

  • Consistently applies the Scientific Method in the planning and execution of experimental plans and problem solving. Formulate hypotheses and develop experimental plans to test hypotheses.

  • Communicates and appropriately documents work in the form of internal reports/presentations. Draft and submit patent disclosures as appropriate.

  • Have in-depth understanding of the patent and journal literature across related areas of technology. Understand and incorporate the competitive landscape in technology mapping. Stay current with developments in relevant area of technology. Serves as an information resource for the project team and stakeholders.

  • Collaborates effectively across the department; presents research project updates and demonstrates capability to influence audience with effective presentation skills.

  • Serves on multi-disciplinary project teams to collaborate, provide technical input, and deliver results aligned with team deliverables.

  • Understands and follows appropriate EH&S standards, policies and procedures applicable to their job. Lead by example in the area of safety behaviors by promoting safe work habits.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Sciences, Engineering or a related discipline is required.

  • 1+ years of academia and/or industrial experience in polymer processing area.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team-environment to drive projects to completion.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or PhD degree in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering discipline

  • Academia and/or industrial experience in compounding & extrusion area as a strong plus

  • Digital/Modelling experience in process development and simulation as a strong plus

  • Academia and/or industrial experience in polyolefin material science and/or formulation area as a plus
