L.L. Bean is currently searching for a Cloud Data Platform Architect to join our team within our Information Services (IS) department.

We welcome the opportunity for this role to be hybrid based at the corporate headquarters in Freeport, Maine, or to be based remotely in the following states: Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin.

In this important position you will help lead our team on an exciting journey to build a new data and analytics platform in the cloud. L.L.Bean was recently recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of America’s best mid-size employers and as we begin our data transformation, we are looking for a Cloud Data Platform Architect to join our I.T. team. Working closely with business partners, project teams and other I.T. architects and technicians, this person will play a leading role to shape, implement, and sustain our vision for a modern, scalable, and secure data platform in the cloud. This new role will help with the platform architecture, selection, data architecture, solutioning, and engineering of our Enterprise Data Platform. They will ensure that business needs are met, expected capabilities made available, and required service and support levels are achieved as we strive to enable a data-driven business. This position has oversight responsibilities for the continued evolution of the Enterprise Data Platform, architecture strategies, and components at L.L.Bean; ensuring alignment with business goals and industry trends.

Responsibilities:

  • Join our Enterprise Data Platform project team as a key leader in multiple aspects of the project to bring new data and analytics capabilities to L.L.Bean.

  • Help lead the definition and implementation of the architecture and technology solutions to stand up our new Enterprise Data Platform in the cloud.

  • Develop patterns and solutions for migrating and re-engineering existing Data Warehouse data, BI assets and processes to the cloud as well as new feeds of data with disparate data types.

  • Help identify, document, and implement high-volume batch and real-time data ingestion and pipeline technologies, solutions, and standards for the Enterprise Data Platform.

  • Shape and evolve Data Governance practices on the Enterprise Data Platform that adhere to Privacy by Design and FAIR principles.

  • Help design and implement a robust semantic layer that abstracts complex data structures and enhances data accessibility for end-users.

  • Architect data extracts processes with a focus on optimizing data transfer and minimizing egress costs by leveraging cost-effective data storage and retrieval strategies.

  • Develop and enforce a comprehensive security framework that ensure least privileges access for both end users and service accounts, safeguarding data during transit and at rest.

  • Collaborate with data engineers across various teams to enforce development standards, ensure architectural consistency, and build a scalable framework that supports quality assurance processes.

  • Meet with internal business partners throughout the company to gather and refine their data and analytics requirements and turn them into actionable solutions and architectural designs.

  • Partner with business and IT teams to understand business strategies and stakeholder requirements and effectively translate them into data and analytics solutions leveraging the Enterprise Data Platform.

  • Mentor team members in cloud database, data ingestion and pipeline technologies and processes.

  • Monitor, troubleshoot and repair issues and performance bottlenecks.

  • Develop and refresh multi-year domain roadmap for the Enterprise Data Platform.

  • Stay current on industry trends and offerings, plug into user groups, and understand trends and opportunities to ensure we are using the best possible data and analytics tools and techniques.

  • Establish a muti-zone data architecture with appropriate data modeling frameworks specific to the tier, data type and usage.

  • Implement tooling to assist in data governance including data catalog, data classification, policies, access controls, and more.

Education Level: 4-Year Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.IT Experience: 7+ years

Skills and Qualifications:

Technical Skills

  • 3+ years of experience in designing and building data platforms on the cloud using, preferably on Google Cloud Platform

  • Expert architecture, systems analysis and design experience in the data warehouse space

  • Expert data modeling skills in particular for cloud data warehouse and analytics optimization

  • Strong familiarity with cloud technologies supporting data warehouses, data lakes, and data products from Google, including:

  • Databases and file storage: Cloud Storage, BigQuery, CloudSQL, BigLake

  • Data ingestion and pipelining: Pub/Sub, Dataform, Dataflow, etc

  • Data governance and data catalog: Dataplex, Data Catalog

  • Other techs: Cloud Composer, Cloud Functions, Looker semantic layer

  • Familiarity with data analytics and BI tools used with cloud databases, including:

  • Spreadsheet BI tooling: Excel

  • Data visualization tooling: Tableau and Looker

  • Advanced analytics tooling and languages for data science and ML modeling

  • Experience with Data Governance concepts and tooling including data catalog/business glossary, classification, policies, access controls and more.

  • Data Privacy/Security Compliance: PCI, GDPR, CPRA, CPA, CDPA, and more

  • Log Analysis Tools: Splunk

  • Testing: Automation, System, Performance

  • Project Management: Kanban, Scrum, Waterfall

  • Work Management and Collaboration Tools: Jira, Confluence, SharePoint
