Job Summary Basic Function: The Assistant Shop Manager assists the Shop Manager is all areas of responsibility for the shop business activity, including equipment procurement, inventory management, maintenance of vehicle fleet and equipment, ensuring safety of operations, and assist with all administrative duties. Organizational Responsibilities: This position will report to the Shop Manager. This position will interact with shop manager, shop employees, paving crew members, construction members, vendors, management staff, and fleet drivers. Main Responsibilities Assist in developing programs, for the shop, to maximize operation results, sales, and profits Assist with recording work performed relating to each piece of equipment and/or vehicle Assist with directing work for shop employees Assist in the evaluation of causes of production inefficiencies and delays and recommend corrective action Assist with the purchasing function for the shop supplies and establish guidelines for the levels of inventories required to be maintained Assist with tracking and reporting fuel usage Assist with vehicle registrations for the fleet vehicles Assist with monitoring the use of company owned equipment and rental equipment Assist with purchasing rental and new equipment Assist in monitoring the certifications of CMV and CDL class vehicles Assist with monitoring the compliance of environmental permits and insurance certificates Assist in providing a work environment which focus on delivering excellence, problem solving, team building, building relationships, and meeting company goals Assist in managing the building and tool maintenance to create a safe working environment Assist in ensuring the shop is adequately staffed, scheduled, and technicians are properly trained. Assist in ensuring the fleet meets DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations Prepare capital appropriation plans in conjunction with Shop Manager, including feasibility studies for project justification Education Typically requires a bachelor's degree and at least 4-5 years of experience Mechanic with workshop experience Qualifications To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: The Assistant Shop Manager will have graduated with a bachelor's degree/associate's degree or experience with fleet management, fleet maintenance procedures, managing employees, and technical experience with operating heavy equipment. Reasoning Abilities: Must be able to employ independent judgment and resourcefulness in solving mechanical issues and understand and communicate repair needs and outcome. Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills are required Must have prior experience developing and implementing programs procedures Must have good written and verbal communication skills Must possess a valid driver's license and a driving
