ArcBest Senior Tax Accountant - Operating Tax in Fort Smith, Arkansas

Currently, we are looking for a Senior Tax Accountant, Operating Tax to join the ArcBest team. The Senior Tax Accountant - Operating Tax is responsible for providing compliance and planning in the areas of operating taxes including property and sale and use taxes, licensing, and permitting for ArcBest and related companies. This position is also responsible for filing returns related to mileage, weight, etc.

Your contribution may include:

  • Prepare and file property tax renditions, motor carrier reports, and local business tax returns.

  • Pay personal and real property tax bills.

  • Work with consultants to protest property tax valuations.

  • Maintain correct property tax accrual balance for financial statements.

  • Manage property tax examinations.

  • Supervise and review the property tax function.

  • Collaborate with ABF Freight terminals to determine and manage specific licensing needs for equipment and operations, utilizing experience and judgment along with information from branch managers to determine split between 80,000 lb. and 54,000 lb. licenses to ensure that necessary 80,000 lb. equipment is available, but that excess 80,000 lb. licenses are not purchased.

  • Determine specific licensing needs by working with the Maintenance and Linehaul Operations department to enter and manage equipment within ArcBest system.

  • Maintain the IRP Fleet account and process the annual IRP Renewal based on a determination of terminal licensing needs with regards to equipment type and tractor weight capacity.

  • Analyze and reconcile all monthly mileage and odometer discrepancies for IRP tractors to determine licensing and needs.

  • Process all equipment purchases and obtain appropriate license plates and weight class.

  • Update Equipment Master File and other applications in the mainframe system daily.

  • Work directly with state government officials on licensing issue problems.

  • Process all lien applications for financed equipment and send supporting documents to lenders.

  • Determine which tractors qualify for Double and Triple Permits as well as US Customs Permits and purchase the permits.

  • Determine where annual Hazardous Material Permits and Canadian Firearms Permits are necessary and purchase the permits.

  • Renew annual alcohol and tobacco permits and monitor shipping activity for delivery into new states to determine where alcohol and tobacco permits are necessary.

  • Draft sale memos and work with the legal department to assign titles to buyers, as necessary.

  • Prepare and file Sales and Use tax reports for all companies.

  • Review operations and determine sales and use tax registration and filing requirements.

  • Coordinate and manage sales and use tax audits.

  • Prepare Federal excise tax returns including Forms 720 and 2290.

  • Prepare and file IFTA returns.

  • Maintain knowledge of systems providing tax information.

  • Maintain knowledge of sales and use tax regulations.

  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

As a Senior Tax Accountant, Operating Tax, you will be a member of the ArcBest Operation Tax team in Fort Smith, AR. Your hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with irregular hours that may occur depending on workload.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, required.

Experience: 3 years tax experience with property tax experience, preferred. 3 years experience in large fleet licensing and permitting, preferably LTL.

Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, preferred. Ability to work with internally developed software, preferred.

Additional Requirements: Must be able to communicate well with company personnel at various levels as well as outside contacts such as government officials and auditors, required.

Certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Preferred upon hire.
