Department Summary:

MITRE's Applied Software Engineering Department focuses on rapid software prototyping and proof of concept development across a wide range of sectors, including defense, homeland security, health, space, and law enforcement. Leveraging agile methodologies, the department provides comprehensive support throughout the entire software lifecycle. Its core competencies enable the department to swiftly respond to sponsor needs, delivering innovative solutions that address complex challenges in various domain areas.

Roles & Responsibilities:

As a Software Engineer at MITRE, you will enjoy a collaborative environment where you will work closely with others in an organization that encourages and values collaboration, mentoring, and continuous learning. You will have the opportunity to leverage and grow your hands-on software engineering expertise as you contribute to real challenges across a variety of domains.

While responding to these challenges, you will leverage and grow your hands-on skills with software design and development, engaging in the full software engineering lifecycle using modern technologies.

The roles and responsibilities for the successful senior software engineer include:

  • Develop and test software based on project requirements and specifications.

  • Collaborate with team members to design innovative software solutions.

  • Write clean, scalable, and efficient code using programming languages like Java, C++, Python, etc.

  • Debug and troubleshoot software to resolve issues and improve performance.

  • Participate in code reviews to maintain code quality and share best practices.

  • Assist in the documentation of software, including user manuals and technical reports.

  • Continually update technical knowledge and skills by attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, etc.

  • Contribute to all phases of the software development lifecycle, including ideation, design, development, testing, and deployment.

  • Work closely with project managers to ensure timely delivery of software projects.

  • Adhere to best practices in software development and the company's internal procedures and standards.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience

  • BS degree in a technical discipline (including but not limited to Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, etc.).

  • Must be a US citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a federal security clearance

  • Documented experience with "Hands-on" skills in at least one object-oriented, procedural, functional, or declarative programming language (e.g., Java, C/C++, Swift, C#, Python, Go, JavaScript)

  • Demonstrated ability and desire to quickly learn and apply new technologies

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues

  • High level desire to help their nation solve its most critical challenges

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exposure to software development tools and frameworks, including source control management tools (e.g., Git)

  • Familiarity with agile software development methodologies

  • Knowledge of software design patterns

  • Knowledge of database technologies, including relational, document, graph, or vector approaches

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Preference given to qualified candidates with an active clearance

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$93,000 - $116,500 - $140,000 Annual
