Summary About the Position: This position conducts air traffic control duties and advisory instructions for Fort Irwin Restricted Areas integrating nonparticipating live fire activities, airborne and close air support operations. Issue FAA assigned transponder codes for tracking aircraft. Assist pilot with planning flights and filing flight plans. Determine altitude and direction to be flown as necessary to integrate aircraft into areas ground units are firing through. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing control and separation of air traffic; administering instructions to aircraft operating within the area of operation; and assisting pilots in planning flights and filing flight plans. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also be a graduate of a DoD component or FAA approved formal Air Traffic Controller school and possess Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) and/or Control Tower Operator (CTO) certification. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Attention to Detail Decisiveness Planning and Evaluating Technical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09). Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. Employees hired for the first time ("originally hired") into covered GS-2152 positions must not exceed the established Maximum Entry Age (MEA) at the time of appointment. The MEA for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) is 36. An employee originally hired into a covered ATC position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches age 36 unless a waiver from Department of Army is approved prior to appointment. Fort Irwin has school Pre-school and Pre-K through middle school. High School is 35 miles from Fort Irwin. Fort Irwin has childcare services for employees who work on the post.
