TheWalter Scott Jr. College of Engineering (https://www.engr.colostate.edu/) ( WSCOE ) at Colorado State University is a dynamic and diverse college comprising approximately 170 faculty, 300 postdoctoral scholars and research scientists, 95 academic and administrative staff, 2,500 undergraduate students, and 1,050 graduate students. TheEngineering Success Center (https://www.engr.colostate.edu/engineering-success-center/#staff) within the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineeringprovides support and resources to current and prospective engineering undergraduate students. This unit is responsible for undergraduate recruiting efforts, retention initiatives, academic advising, diversity and access initiatives, career support services, administering scholarships, and coordinating WSCOE events. The Engineering Success Center is the first point of contact for many incoming students and their families.
Position Summary
The Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering at Colorado State University seeks a full-time, 12-month Undergraduate Academic Advisor dedicated to supporting first-year students as they transition into rigorous engineering programs. This position provides comprehensive advising and programming aimed at fostering student success, retention, and a sense of belonging within the College.
Key responsibilities include guiding students in academic planning, overcoming challenges, and utilizing campus resources; supporting orientation sessions and academic transitions; managing academic records and communications; and assisting with initiatives to improve student success metrics. The advisor will actively address the unique strengths and needs of a diverse student population, including those from underrepresented and first-generation backgrounds.
Collaboration with college departments, participation in recruitment and student engagement events, and administrative contributions are essential aspects of this role. By employing a holistic and innovative approach, the advisor will play a pivotal role in empowering students to achieve their academic and personal goals.
The Undergraduate Academic Advisor will also contribute to a variety of initiatives that align with the college’s strategic goals, including student success programs, outreach, and professional development efforts.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the US by the proposed start date; the department will not sponsor a visa for this position.
Required Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in engineering, counseling, liberal arts, cultural studies, public administration or related degree.
Experience advising, counseling, and/or providing academic support for students.
Experience with advising students in a one-on-one setting.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Access.
Demonstrated experience working with, interacting, or collaborating with diverse populations in a positive manner.
Preferred Job Qualifications
Two (2) years of professional experience advising, counseling, and/or providing academic support to students.
Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects effectively and efficiently.
Excellent organizational and communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal, and public speaking) as demonstrated by resume/cover letter and experience with public speaking.
Demonstrated experience developing intervention strategies for supporting the academic success of students.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively on a team and individually.
Experience using advising and student tracking software such as Navigate, Oracle, or Banner
Demonstrated customer service experience with the ability to effectively engage and collaborate with diverse constituents such as students, parents, and educators.
Demonstrated commitment to historically underrepresented communities that are supported on a university campus such as ethnically/racially diverse students, first generation students, veterans, or international students.

Duty/Responsibility
Advise current and prospective students on academic requirements, scheduling of classes, semester-to-semester academic path, administrative procedures related to academics, and utilizing campus resources.
Help students identify and utilize strategies and resources to improve GPAs and overcome academic difficulties.
Process documents related to overrides, exceptions, appeals, education abroad, military, athletics, and other advising issues.
Abide by FERPA regulations to uphold students’ privacy.
Support efforts to streamline communication to students ensuring that deadlines, resources, and events are communicated consistently and at appropriate times.
Communicate with the Registrar’s Office and other student support offices’ staff as needed in advising students.
Document appointments with meeting notes.
Provide tailored support to a diverse student population by addressing the unique strengths and needs of students from underrepresented ethnic, racial, and gender groups, as well as those from first-generation and low-income backgrounds.
Provide comprehensive, individualized advising at orientation sessions for incoming students.
Enhance support for academic transitions and strengthen the ability to track progress to graduation.
Assist with the management of college records, spreadsheets and databases related to the undergraduate program and students.
Learn new technology and tools designed for student success and integrate them into a balanced and holistic approach to advising.
Collaborate within the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering, including all departments, to advise undergraduate students efficiently and effectively.

Complete end of the year reports detailing staff activities, student success metrics, and advising outcomes to support ongoing improvement and accountability.
Participate in large college-wide events such as career fairs, graduation, student involvement fairs, and Engineering Days (E-Days), contributing as needed to ensure successful execution.
Fulfill administrative duties as assigned, supporting various initiatives and responsibilities within the college.
Provide service outside the scope of normal job duties, such as committee work, commission and/or council membership, serving as an advisor, coach, collaborator, mentor, or on a task force, community and/or civic engagement, search committee activities, participation in professional organizations to advance the university and/or college’s scholarly and academic reputations, and volunteer (e.g., assist with commencement, conferences, fairs, move-in days, college and university events outside of immediate job responsibilities, etc.)
