Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. At the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community. This work unit exists to instruct professional veterinary students, provide nursing care to patients, collect blood/tissue samples for evaluation, perform anesthetic and surgical procedures, perform physical examinations, maintain accurate medical records, provide an environment for clinical-related research, and provide clear and accurate information to the clients whose pets are hospitalized. The Avian, Exotic, and Zoological ( AEZ ) Medicine Unit provides examination, diagnostic, and therapeutic management for non-traditional species presented to Colorado State University Teaching Hospital.

Position Summary

We are looking for a team-oriented veterinary technician to join our team! This is a great opportunity to gain experience working with different species. Our clinical team consists of two faculty veterinarians who concentrate on the care of AEZ patients, one registered veterinary technician, and two veterinary interns who perform a 1-year focused training program in AEZ . Ideally, we are looking for someone with some experience with non-traditional species/zoological companion animal species (exotics), but we are also willing to help train someone with an enthusiastic interest in zoological companion animal medicine.

Provide paraprofessional support for the Avian, Exotic, and Zoological medicine departments. Perform diagnostic procedures, perform anesthesia, therapeutic treatments, and provide instruction to veterinary students, interns, and residents. The position is a fully operational technologist performing specialized patient care.

This position has an Essential Services designation, meaning this position is required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the date of hire; the department will not be offering visa sponsorship.

Required Job Qualifications

  • An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND two years of experience assisting in animal surgery, administering anesthesia to animals and/or performing veterinary procedures.

  • Registered Veterinary Technician through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA )

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the date of hire; the department will not be offering visa sponsorship.

  • VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT – Effective January 1, 2024, anyone wanting to use the titles Registered Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician, RVT , or VT will have to be certified through the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians ( CACVT ) AND registered through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ). Preferred Job Qualifications

  • The position needs to be able to collect blood on a variety of species.

  • The position needs to be able to talk to clients about disease process and treatment.

  • Previous experience with non traditional species.

  • Demonstrated experience with communicating effectively with clients. students, faculty and multiple constituents.

  • Ability to maintain calm and composed under high stress situations.

  • Ability to teach DVM students and interns in the technical aspects, formal labs and on a patient demand basis.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Under supervision of faculty and staff veterinarians, this position performs minor medical and surgical techniques on veterinary patients such as venipuncture, IV catheterization, fluid administration, urinary catheterization, abdominocentesis, fluid and blood administration, and advanced procedures for therapeutic management and diagnostic sample submission.

  • Administration of anesthetics and monitoring of anesthesia in patients undergoing medical and surgical procedures will be an important part of this position.

  • This position provides patient care and takes measures to prevent problems or complications in patients they are monitoring.

  • Position needs to be familiar with surgical procedures, instruments, equipment, and patient restraint and handling techniques for AEZ patients.

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position instructs the DVM students, interns and residents in the technical aspects of the above-mentioned techniques in formal labs and on a patient demand basis.

  • Monitors PVM students performing treatments on clinical patients housed in the AEZ ward.

  • Formal teaching within the DVM curriculum or during continuing education events on a limited basis, mainly in laboratories, may be a part of this position.

  • Maintain and follow the established system in place for care of equipment and instruments, maintain cleanliness and order in the AEZ exam rooms, treatment room, ward, and rounds room.

  • Stock treatment room, exam rooms, and ward with necessary supplies.

  • Maintain inventory of AEZ ward, and place orders as needed for necessary supplies.
