Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. To educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every d ay. The Intermediate Care unit is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital which provides 24/7 state-of- the-art perioperative care and medical boarding.

Position Summary

This position recovers patients from anesthesia, provides perioperative care, promotes overall patient comfort, administers medications as needed, and communicates as needed with IC team, work leader and supervisor as needed.

This is an essential worker position and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

A combination of signing bonus + moving expenses available to successful candidates.

Required Job Qualifications

  • An associate degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND one year of experience assisting in animal medicinal care, administering anesthesia to animals and/or performing veterinary surgery.

  • Credentialed in the State of Colorado

  • Registered through DORA (Department of Regulatory Agencies)

Acceptable substitutions:

  • Two years of experience as defined by the department will substitute for each year of required education. A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology will substitute for the associate degree and, at the agency’s discretion, the two years of experience.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

    NOTE : VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT – Effective January 1, 2024, anyone wanting to use the titles Registered Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician, RVT , or VT will have to be certified through the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians ( CACVT ) AND registered through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ). Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Relative experience commensurate with the specific position to be filled.

  • Experience in animal sedation, and anesthetic and surgical patient recovery.

Duty/Responsibility

  • The position provides care to hospitalized patients in Intermediate Care.

  • The position recovers patients from anesthesia, properly administers medications and fluids as needed, and provides overall patient comfort, under the direction of the IC supervisor and work leader.

  • This position works in partnership with the PVM student assigned to the case, and the primary VTH clinician.

  • This position will communicate with other services regarding the care and transport of patients as necessary within departments of the VTH , and transfers patients as needed.

  • The position will accurately perform basic drug calculations, observe and recognize changes in patient status, communicate effectively with the IC team, and demonstrate caring behavior with all patients.

  • This position ensures patient readiness for discharge from the VTH .

Duty/Responsibility

  • Responsible for maintaining equipment in IC, and submitting work orders as needed to make sure that repairs are made. Responsible for cleaning and upkeep of IC unit.

  • Responsible for checking stock levels, and replenishing as needed.

  • Responsible for checking drugs and supplies for expiration date, and replacing when needed.

  • This position adheres to VTH purchasing and Central Supply protocol.

  • This position records all relevant information into the patient’s medical record.

  • This position ensures that all IC patients have been billed accurately before being discharged from the VTH .
