    Description of Work Unit

The Department of Clinical Sciences’ mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high-quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Position Summary

This position will support the biorepository program at the Flint Animal Cancer Center by identifying appropriate patients for participation, obtaining consent from owners, collecting samples, and collating patient data. This position works alongside others in the

biorepository.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree and more than 3 years of relevant professional experience

  • Experience must include:

  • Experience in a veterinary setting interacting with clients and patients

OR

  • Recent Masters degree and no other significant professional experience

    AND

  • Excellent client communication skills in a veterinary setting

    Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience with Red Cap data entry

Duty/Responsibility

  • Management of client consent forms includes determining if patient is eligible to participate in a clinical trial Sample collection includes drawing blood

  • Patient data recording for participants in the Flint Animal Cancer Center Biorepository program

  • Client interaction includes scheduling appointments for trial patients, updating the clinical trials patient roster, communicating with other sites participating in CSU clinical trials, or communicating and coordinating with study sponsors or monitors.

  • This position also continually reevaluates and suggests modifications to the consenting process to ensure compliance with best biobanking practices.

    Job Duty Category Patient Outcome Support

    Duty/Responsibility

This position gathers patient outcome data for pets treated at the FACC oncology clinic, as well as outcome data for patients who have samples in the biorepository. Data is entered into searchable electronic database (RedCap). Specific duties include:

  • Monitoring oncology schedule for patient visits

  • Reading and interpreting medical record to determine patient status regarding disease stage, treatment types, and outcomes.

  • This includes contacting referring veterinarians and pet owners to acquire follow up information on patients of interest.

  • Communication is with clients whose pets are currently undergoing treatment as well as those that have completed treatment and or are deceased.

  • Collection of normal and diseased tissues (otherwise discarded) or other samples approved via the CRB process as part of approved prospective research projects

  • Ensure protocol compliance for all patients enrolled in assigned biorepository clinical trials including case report form completion, sample collection/processing/shipment, and maintenance of study notebooks and data sheets.

    Duty/Responsibility

  • Screen inquiries from external investigators to determine if our biorepository has the samples they are looking for.

  • Reviews data base searches, refines request with external investigators based on required patient and sample characteristics, selects samples that meet those requests, QA/QC the possible patients/samples to meet the need and selects alternatives when necessary.

  • Communicates directly with investigators to refine samples needed and updates about process of sample pulling and shipping.
