Colorado State University, located in Fort Collins, Colorado (approximately 65 miles

North of Denver), is situated on nearly 5,000 acres of land, including the main campus, a foothills campus, an agricultural campus, and a mountain campus (Pingree Park).

Colorado State University also has 4,600 acres for research centers, Cooperative Extension offices, and Colorado State Forest Service stations.

Position Summary

| The role of the Assistant Teacher is to support Mentor and Classroom Teachers in management of the classroom. Assistant Teachers are expected to adhere to the mission, policies, and procedures at the ECC as well as State of Colorado licensing requirements, and NAEYC accreditation standards while implementing a Reggio Emilia inspired approach. ECC Calendar The Early Childhood Center ( ECC ) does not follow the same academic calendar as CSU and this position at the ECC requires employees to work assigned hours when the ECC is open, regardless of whether CSU is in session or not. Duty/Responsibility

  • Know and implement policies and procedures according to staff handbook. Be familiar with parent handbook.

  • Be familiar with the Reggio Emilia approach; communicate with Mentor Teacher about how implementation looks in each individual classroom.

  • Know and assist in execution of classroom routines, including mealtimes (set up and clean up), free play, transitions, large and small group times, and outside play.

  • Actively maintain the outdoor play areas; check for safety, rake mulch to cover fall zones, supervise and engage in children’s play.

  • Maintain a global room awareness to best the support the Mentor and Classroom Teachers. Engage with children unless supporting a transition (i.e. setting up snack).

  • Read daily journals and classroom communication log to be knowledgeable of what is happening in the classroom when you are not present. Ask Mentor or Classroom Teacher for clarification when necessary.

  • Perform daily housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, sanitized, safe preschool environment. Wipe down/sanitize equipment to meet health department /accreditation standards.

  • Positively engage with parents when appropriate during drop off and pick up times. Mentor or Classroom Teacher will have all conversations regarding behavior plans or challenging behaviors. Check in with them regarding this policy.

  • Plan activities and provocations, with the guidance of Mentor Teacher, to promote interest and interaction with the children. Scaffold and challenge children as they explore and learn. If necessary, help lead circle times/class meetings for children.

  • Implement a guidance policy (from Guiding Children’s Behaviors) that incorporates the use of positive redirection and sensitivity to individual children’s needs.

  • Meet with Mentor Teacher weekly to discuss concerns and clarify any individual needs of children and/or behavior plans.
