FORNEY - CITY OF Commercial Building Inspector in Forney, Texas
The following dutiesARE NOTintended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
- Inspect commercial construction projects to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, including structural and architectural components.
- Conducts on-site inspections at all phases of construction to comply with approved plans and specifications and City standards and safety standards, and ensure proper materials are being used and installed correctly; performs regular inspections for all water, sewer, and storm water construction projects to ensure compliance with state and local regulations.
- Conduct damage assessment inspections for commercial buildings following storms or other significant events.
- Maintains records and working files and prepares oral and written reports of work performed.
- Monitors progress of construction work, contracts, and schedules; issues and maintains right-of-way permits as needed; performs walk-through inspections of completed projects to ensure construction, safety, and quality control standards have been met.
- Determine appropriate means of enforcement of code, including issuance of citations and red tags.
- Performs routine materials and field tests to ensure material and workmanship quality.
- Conducts safety inspections and reviews established traffic control procedures for compliance within construction zones.
- Enforce codes, ordinances, and zoning regulations.
- Assists in analyses of selected contractor claims, when required; responds to and resolves public complaints; mediates and resolves issues for other departments, utilities, civil engineers, and permitting matters.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:No direct supervision exercised; may exercise occasional administrative and functional supervision for specified activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess a valid drivers license.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Three (3) years experience in building inspections, commercial and residential.
Special Requirements:Must possess a Plumbing Inspector License from the Texas State Plumbing Board.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
- Operate a motor vehicle safely.
- Exposure to heat, cold, noise, standing water, and construction site hazards.
- Ability to sit, stand, crouch, squat, climb, and walk.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.

- Principles and practices of construction, development, zoning, and land development.
- Computer hardware and software programs.
- Methods and procedures of computerized data management and clear and concise report preparation.
- Ability to read blueprints
- Methods and techniques of problem-solving, research procedures, and public relations.
- Current literature, information sources, and research techniques in the field of municipal planning, building codes, and zoning ordinances.
- Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations applicable to municipal planning.
- City Ordinances, Rules, and Regulations.
