Collins Aerospace is looking for a Principal Structural Engineer to fill a high business impact role by representing the Engineering organization through tactical and strategic oversight. In this role you will provide technical expertise throughout the product design, build, and delivery processes for complex, integrated aircraft components of metallic and advanced composite construction. You will drive meaningful improvements in Engineering Production Support processes through understanding the designs, performing structural analysis, and demonstrating a relentless focus on continuous improvements in engineering efficiency and enhancements in product producibility/cost reduction activities.

This position works Onsite in Foley, Alabama.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Formulate structural analysis of a complex nature using hand calculations and computer analysis, including static stress, fatigue stress, fracture, and fatigue structural analysis of aerospace components.

  • Define, direct, and document repair designs and assess the structural integrity of various metallic, bonded metallic and advance composite structure for aerospace products.

  • Work with Materials Review Board (MRB) to develop standard repair instructions.

  • Analyze repair proposals and prepare formal reports in support of minor and major repairs for customer and FAA approval, which may also include obtaining authorized signatures.

  • Analyze materials and processes and approved alternates.

  • Provide limited direction to others in stress analysis and may act as technical lead on assigned projects.

  • Coordinate repairs with internal external customers, as well as external staff of major airlines and aircraft manufacturers.

  • Develop processes and tools to support continuous improvement and efficiency realizations throughout the Engineering Production Support workflow activities, including maintaining the defect mapping database and design mapping.

  • Assist cross-functional technical team in identifying opportunities for improved producibility and works with extended engineering team to implement meaningful changes.

  • Interacts with Operations and Engineering personnel to highlight and drive implementation of cost reduction improvements across product lines and processes.

  • Provide technical expertise to Engineering Build Assessment and design study activities to drive regular improvements in defect eradication.

  • Review, quantify, and drive support of defect corrective action plans across the product lines.

  • Support manufacturing and / or engineering escape resolution through regular interaction with Quality Assurance personnel and Mechanics.

  • Support product development teams through defect eradication and producibility feedback early in the product lifecycle to drive improved lessons learned.

Qualifications/ Experience Needed:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience.

  • Strong structural analysis background including static stress analysis and fatigue analysis.

  • Experience with stress analysis of metallic and advanced composite structure including repairs on bonded metallic and composite structure.

  • Experience using MSC Nastran and Patran for FEA.

  • Metallic and advanced composite structural analysis capabilities.

  • Ability to perform detail analysis by hand calculations and computer methods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must have intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook.

  • Programming skills (VBA, VB.NET, C#.NET, etc.) for internal tool development activities to aid in task automation.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering is highly preferred.

  • Experience working effectively across functional boundaries and have demonstrated time management skills to handle fluctuating, multiple priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to address issues of complex scope.

  • Proactive, action-oriented approach to managing tasks and activities.

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time percent.

  • Airframe/aerospace design and stress experience.

  • Experience working on aircraft modifications and/or in an MRO environment performing design to return aircraft to an airworthy condition.

  • Experience working with manufacturing and assembly operations environments.

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
