Special Information

  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
  • This position is .75 FTE with option to choose a 9-month work schedule at 40 hours per week; or a 10-month work schedule at 36 hours per week.

Job Description

Academic Program Coordinator for the Park Ranger Law Enforcement Academy (PRLEA) operating in the Department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation. Works with and under the direction of the academy director. PRLEA is a significant component of the Parks and Recreation Management program and is offered as a Minor in Natural Resource Law Enforcement. The academy is also offered to non-credit (\"affiliate\") students seeking the training to qualify for employment as a law enforcement ranger with the National Park Service, other land management agencies or police agencies.

The person in this position has primary responsibility for the coordination of academy operations, classroom activities, reality-based field training, role-players and instructors. This involves managing logistics, equipment care and inventorying, purchasing, and assisting with scheduling. Depending on background and experience, this person may also instruct students in selected topics, serve as a field exercise evaluator or role-player, modify or update learning plans, prepare presentation materials, and periodically perform program financial analyses. This person also helps ensure compliance with policies and practices as established by the program director, the university, and the National Park Service.

Program Coordination - 50%

  • Instructor and role player coordination.
  • Assists in website monitoring and improvements.
  • Helps plan and execute logistics for reality-based field training and classroom sessions.
  • Tracks supply and equipment condition and inventories.
  • Instructs students regarding equipment care and use.
  • Manages purchasing for the program.
  • Assists in scheduling of instructors and facilities.
  • Distributes, collects, and process forms and documents related to the program.
  • Understands, improves, and documents processes used in the program.
  • Coordinates events related to the program.
  • Assists in development of program content.
  • Prioritizes tasks for meeting commitments and enhancing efficiencies.
  • Cooperates and collaborates with other NAU faculty and staff.

Program Management - 40%

  • Independently and with Director create scenario based training modules.
  • Monitor students\' performance and attendance,
  • Facilitates curriculum elements as requested.
  • Assists in creating course schedule.
  • Maintains records related to instruction, inventories, student, and instructor performances, using electronic databases and other means.
  • Researches, summarizes, and analyzes information related to program activities.
  • Prepares various reports and written works.
  • Supervises field activities that include adjun t instructors, role players, and student workers.
  • Provides input to budget forecasts.
  • Assists in evaluation of instruction by instructors.
  • Instructs others on program guidelines and details.
  • Helps to ensure compliance with National Park Service contract requirements and policy.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable university and other laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Aids director to plan and execute recruiting efforts.
  • Helps maintain recruiting infrastructure, e.g., program website.
  • Effects minor repairs on academy equipment.
  • Transports, organizes, and sets up training equipment and supplies, lifting up to 50 pounds.

Other - 10%

  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environement

  • The expected working environment will be office and classroom setting with a significant amount of time spent outdoors in varying terrain throughout Northern Arizona. Employee will be expected to work outdoors in inclement weather to including but not limited to cold, snow, wind, rain, and extreme heat.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor\'s degree in relevant field.

Two to four years\' experience in land management, parks and recreation management,
