Phillips 66 Lab Technician, Ferndale Refinery in Ferndale, Washington

The Lab Technician, Ferndale Refinery performs tasks related to the completion of routine and non-routine testing within the lab. This includes, but is not limited to, the day-to-day process samples, QA/QC samples, and all finished product testing and certification.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Participation in the laboratory safety program

  • Assist in the execution of all laboratory control testing and reporting

  • Calibration and standardization of various test equipment and reagents

  • Develops and maintains skills related to safety methods, SOP’s, and LIMS system

  • Monitors and maintains inventory of reagents and instrument equipment consumables

  • Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work environment

  • Routine testing of process samples and certification of final products

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Possess a valid Driver’s License

  • Possess or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card

  • Willing and able to perform and comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • To work extended hours, to include evenings, weekends and holidays

  • To respond to refinery emergencies during off-hours

  • To work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines

  • To climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height

  • To transport articles up to 50 pounds

  • To work around chemicals, including acids and bases

  • To work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat

  • To work outside in harsh weather conditions

  • To wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

  • To maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or other related scientific fields

  • Completed college level General Chemistry series and Organic Chemistry series

  • 2+ years of experience in the petrochemical industry

  • Experience in an analytical lab environment including the use of modern analytical instruments

  • SAP experience/LIMS experience

  • Proficient in MS Office

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees

  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference to work

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

The Ferndale Refinery is located on Puget Sound in Ferndale, Washington, approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. Facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation and hydrodesulfurization units. It processes a variety crude oils, including Alaskan North Slope, Canadian and other foreign and U.S. shale crudes, primarily delivered via marine vessel and pipeline. Within the refinery is a rail car crude oil receiving facility with a capacity of 30,000 BPD. This offloading facility, owned by Phillips 66 Partners, makes the receipt of additional crude by rail car possible. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include residual fuel oil, which is supplied to the northwest marine bunker fuel market. Most refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline and barge to major markets in the northwestern United States.

Compensation

The base pay range for this role is $85,590 - $99,300 depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
