Scientist
General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) is seeking a mid-level environmental chemist to support our long-standing contracts with the USEPA. The position primarily involves support of environmental programs, including the Clean Water Act, Oil Pollution Act, National Contingency Plan, RCRA and CERLCA, with an emphasis on the development, validation, and implementation of organic and inorganic test methods and review of environmental data.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Specific responsibilities include:
Interact daily with the project team, researching answers to questions from the public, state and Federal agencies, and others, about analytical methods for permitting and compliance monitoring.
Support method development and evaluation projects, solicit laboratory services from commercial laboratories, coordinate and track samples and laboratory progress
Review environmental analytical data against project and regulatory requirements, using established review procedures, interact with laboratories to resolve issues, assist other staff in assembling databases of results, and develop written recommendations concerning findings.
Assist with preparation of presentations, posters, and written reports.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental chemistry or a related field
Three or more years of experience in applied environmental chemistry or environmental analyses
Experience working with modern laboratory instrumentation, including GC, GC/MS, LC/MS, AA, ICP, and ICP/MS
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Skilled in use of MS Word, Excel, and Access
Self-starter, but team player able to take direction and carry out projects with minimal supervision
Must pass a pre-employment drug screening test
Must be a US citizen
Preferred:
Environmental laboratory experience
Experience using EPA test methods for determination of organic and inorganic pollutants
Field sampling experience
Understanding of federal environmental laws and regulations
Firm understanding of quality assurance and control aspects of sampling and analysis methods

The position is based in GDIT’s Falls Church, Virginia office, with possible travel to conferences across the country on a periodic basis. Local travel to client offices in Washington, DC and to other GDIT facilities in the Falls Church area and Baltimore is anticipated.

The likely salary range for this position is $69,264 - $79,654. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
