Fairfield University Head Coach, Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving in Fairfield, Connecticut

Job Description:

DEPARTMENT: Athletics

BASIC FUNCTION: Responsible for directing all phases of an aspirational Division I Men's & Women's Swimming and Diving program within the NCAA and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, with an expectation of success and recognition at the regional and national levels. The Coach must operate within the framework of NCAA and Conference rules and governance while adhering to, and fostering, the University and Athletics Department mission, values, goals and objectives. Must be skilled in all aspects of coaching the sport and possess the practical ability to recruit, develop and retain student-athletes while effectively administering a comprehensive program.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS: Non-traditional hours; exposure to blood borne pathogens in accident/emergency situations. Extensive travel involved.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated effectiveness in organizational, management, supervisory, recruitment and interpersonal skills. Previous coaching experience in Division I, previous Head Coaching experience and experience as a collegiate student-athlete are preferred.

REPORTS TO: Director of Athletics

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. The authority and responsibility for a successful Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving Program involves:
  • overseeing the recruitment of academically qualified student athletes.

  • helping to maintain the progress of all student athletes with assistance from the department resources for Student Athletes.

  • preparing the team for practice and competition.

  • supervising and providing counseling, training and conditioning for the Men's & Women's Swimming and Diving student-athletes.

  • maintain the high moral and ethical standards commonly expected of the coach as a leading representative of the University

  1. Responsible for a Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving program that operates within an atmosphere conducive to compliance with NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations:
  • ensuring compliance with NCAA, Conference, and University rules in the Men's & Women's Swimming and Diving program with the assistance of University compliance services personnel.

  • reporting of suspected or confirmed rules violations on a timely basis.

  • maintaining accurate files and documentation including information for the annual report, recruiting, etc.

  1. Responsible for the management of staff:
  • hiring and evaluating performance of assistant coaches and student staff.

  • communicating effectively with the men's & women's Swimming and Diving staff, administrative staff and Regina Quick Recreation Center personnel on all pertinent team, departmental and University matters.

  • maintaining a program climate conducive to the professional growth of staff including rules, education, and departmental information

  • evaluate assistant coaches and staff for conduct, behavior, and performance that is violative of the Rules and Regulations or University policy.

  1. Responsible for the planning of the Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving program:
  • planning and arranging the Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving team’s schedule which will be developed in consultation with the Athletic Director. The schedule shall meet University objectives and comply with obligations under NCAA and Conference rules. For any disagreement between coach and Athletic Director, the Athletic Director has final authority.

  • meeting regularly with the Sport Administrator to ensure a clear understanding and a continuing dialogue regarding all aspects of the program.

  • recommending improvements to maintain the success of the Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving program.

  1. Responsible for the preparation and proper control of Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving budget:
  • planning and forecasting for costs and expenses of assigned budget in order to ensure effective operations of program.

  • recommending appropriate changes in the annual budget requests.

  • approving all program expenditures throughout the fiscal year.

  1. Work in the best interest of Athletics and the University:
  • being available for public relations activities with radio, TV and other media as may be required.

  • leading a program that has consistent track record of success.

  • In partnership with Advancement, participate effectively in fundraising events and initiatives to enhance visibility of the program and secure financial support for current and future program needs.

  • connect with Alumni through University friends’ groups to encourage ongoing support of the program

  1. Receive annual written approval(in accordance with current NCAA legislation) from the Athletic Director and President prior to accepting any athletic related income and benefits from sources outside the institution including contractual agreements and letters of appointment; sources of income shall include but are not limited to: income from annuities; sports camps; housing benefits (including preferential housing arrangements); country club memberships; complimentary ticket sales; television and radio programs; and endorsements or consultations with athletics shoe, apparel or equipment manufacturers.

  2. Participate in the professional development of the Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving program:

  • attending Divisional and Departmental gatherings and seminars to understand the University, its goals and objectives.

  • conducting regular staff meetings of Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving staff.

  • monitoring developments in NCAA Swimming & Diving through attendance at workshops, seminars and meetings of related associations and organizations.

  • promoting an image of effectiveness and courtesy throughout the community and the campus.

  1. Promote a safe and secure work environment:
  • promoting the proper utilization of equipment, tools and staff,

  • notifying proper authorities and supervisor immediately of any unsafe working conditions.

  1. Perform other related duties as directed or dictated by responsibilities or supervision.
