The Histology Supervisor, in collaboration with the Laboratory Medical and Administrative Directors, oversees and directs the activities of the histology department, ensuring quality control and regulatory compliance in accordance with College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards. Based in Everett, Washington, this role also oversees the histology department in Seattle, Washington. Responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the histology laboratory, including immunohistochemistry (IHC), and providing direct supervision to a team of.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all operations, including IHC, within the histology department ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Ability to travel to another location 25-50% of the time for meetings, training sessions, or to oversee multiple laboratory sites

  • Supervises and provides leadership to histotechnologists, histotechnicians, grossing technicians, and processing staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation

  • Performs and oversees various histology tasks, from routine to complex procedures. Handles specimen processing, embedding, cutting, staining, and accessioning

  • Ensures that laboratory operations meet quality standards and regulatory requirements, including maintaining compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other accrediting agencies. Maintains knowledge of current laboratory practices, procedures, and technologies, and keeps up-to-date with changes in regulatory requirements and industry standardsDevelops, implements, and maintains policies and procedures for histology laboratory operations, including quality control, quality assurance, and safety

  • Demonstrates solid problem-solving skills and analytical abilities. Identifies and troubleshoots technical issues, implementing quality control measures as needed

  • Maintains instruments, verifies functionality, and documents maintenance activities

  • Monitors and evaluates laboratory test systems to ensure the accuracy and precision of test results and develops corrective action plans as needed

  • Coordinates and ensures participation in proficiency testing programs, including ordering and distributing samples, monitoring and evaluating results, and implementing corrective action plans as neededAddresses and investigates safety event reports in a timely and appropriate manner and takes corrective action as needed

  • Actively participates in meetings and committees, contributing insights and collaborating with team members to achieve organizational and departmental goals

  • Collaborates with other departments, including physicians, nurses, and administration, to ensure timely and accurate test results and to provide consultation on histology laboratory testing and results interpretation

  • Maintains inventory and orders supplies, equipment, and reagents as needed

  • Maintains records and prepares reports related to operations, including quality control, proficiency testing, and instrument maintenance

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university in histology, biology or having emphasized anatomical, biological, and chemical sciences

  • A minimum of 4 years of Histology experience

  • Histotechnologist (HTL) Certificate from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or another national accrediting agency is required or able to be obtained within 12 months of employment.

  • BLS certification is required or obtained within the first 30 days of employment

  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of histology laboratory operations, including tissue processing, embedding, cutting, staining, and quality control procedures. Demonstrate a deep understanding of regulatory requirements, such as CAP standards, ensuring compliance in all aspects of laboratory operations. Familiarity with pathological and physiological conditions that may affect test results and tissue staining. Knowledge extends to instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, ensuring the smooth functioning of equipment within the laboratory. Remain updated on advancements in the field of histology through continuing education and professional development activities. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications

  • Exhibits solid leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills essential for effectively managing a histology laboratory. Possessing excellent organizational abilities, enabling them to oversee day-to-day operations efficiently and prioritize tasks as needed. Their technical proficiency allows for the performance of a wide range of histology tasks, from routine to complex procedures, with precision and accuracy. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with laboratory staff, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders

Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $70,200 to $137,800 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
