Full-Time Patient Care Technician - 6 Main Outpatient Cath Lab

Overview: UPMC Hamot is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Technician (PCT) to join our 6 Main Outpatient Cath Lab team. This role serves as the central hub of communication and patient assistance in our outpatient department. The position involves both secretarial responsibilities and hands-on Patient Care Technician (PCT) duties. The individual in this role will coordinate communication between Registration, PACU, and procedural departments to ensure efficient patient flow and departmental operations. We are looking for someone with exceptional communication skills who thrives in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to patient care and excel in a collaborative healthcare setting.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM, with flexible scheduling to accommodate departmental needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Assist with patient procedures, daily living activities, physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provide feedback to RN and report any changes in patient status.

  • Core Responsibilities: Perform UPMC core nursing assistant duties including blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care. Additionally, complete at least four of the following tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing changes, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scans, straight catheterization, or IV catheter removal.

  • Communication: Establish effective communication with other departments and maintain professional, respectful relationships. Document patient information accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Team Collaboration: Contribute to unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Participate in department projects and quality initiatives.

  • Professional Development: Constructively receive feedback, identify learning needs, and engage in self-improvement. Support department-based projects and adhere to safety policies and procedures.

  • Patient Instruction: Provide patient and family instruction under RN direction, and apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per protocol.

  • Required Skills: Proficiency in UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs, point of care testing, telemetry monitoring, and basic dressings. Ability to perform additional advanced skills such as phlebotomy, IV removal, and basic arrhythmia monitoring as needed.

  • Communication: Clear and effective communication with healthcare team members. Demonstrated understanding of cultural diversity and workplace safety.

  • Professionalism: Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, and a commitment to patients and colleagues. Ability to adapt to changes and manage responsibilities efficiently.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must also have either a) 1 Year of general healthcare experience, OR b) 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, OR c) enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR d) completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.

  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class

  • Successful completion of basic information system training.

  • Microcomputer experience preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Act 34
