UPMC Patient Care Technician, 3 South in Erie, Pennsylvania

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Nursing Assistant to join the team on 3 South Observation Acute Care Unit!

This position is Full-Time, with rotating day and night shifts.

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides patient care, assists with procedures and activities of daily living, and supports physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.

  • Performs core nursing assistant responsibilities, including vital signs, specimen collection, blood glucose monitoring, I&O, and more, plus at least four additional tasks like phlebotomy, EKG, or IV catheter removal.

  • Reports equipment malfunctions, maintains effective communication, and establishes respectful relationships within the team.

  • Contributes to unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

  • Receives feedback constructively, identifies learning needs, and seeks to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.

  • Communicates effectively with healthcare team members and demonstrates cultural competence and professionalism.

  • Follows all safety and patient care policies and procedures, documenting in medical records as required.

  • Assists in patient and family education under RN direction, including applying and removing restraints per protocol.

  • Supports department projects, quality initiatives, and handles clerical functions as needed.

  • Performs advanced skills like phlebotomy, Foley catheter removal, EKG, and NG tube management based on department needs.

  • Adheres to competencies and behaviors, and performs additional duties as assigned.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Must have one of the following: - 1 year of general healthcare experience. - 6 months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion. - Enrollment in a PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with at least one completed clinical rotation. - Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.

  • Successful completion of basic information system training. Microcomputer experience preferred.

  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.

  • EMT or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program, preferred.

  • Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Act 34

  • ACLS preferred
