Nursing Assistant - 6 South CT Surgery

Join our team on 6 South CT Surgery, a 43-bed unit with 11 step-down beds specializing in post-operative care for cardiothoracic, vascular, and gastric bypass patients. Our unit also supports kidney transplant and hepatobiliary surgery patients, providing vital care as they transition from ICU to standard care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care under RN supervision, including daily living activities (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating).

  • Maintain a safe and organized environment, conducting safety checks and keeping patient areas clean.

  • Acquire and distribute supplies to support patient care.

  • Perform UPMC core responsibilities: blood glucose checks, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, and more.

  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team and report changes in patient status.

  • Participate in unit activities, including responding to call lights and transporting patients.

  • Document patient care according to established procedures and comply with safety policies.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a healthcare team.

  • Understanding of patient safety and commitment to high-quality care.

  • Ability to adapt and respond to feedback and changing situations.

  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Successful completion of a UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program.

  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

  • Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR certification required per AHA standards, including didactic and skills demonstration, within 30 days of hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

  • Act 34 clearance.
