Job Description :

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Independently or under supervision, performs routine and special procedures on patient tissue specimens. Assists lab management with the daily operations of the department.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Embeds, sections, accurately labels and processes tissue sections in accordance with department policies and procedures to produce slides for pathologist's or surgeon's review. Performs routine and special staining procedures. May assist with collection of anatomic pathology specimens. (40%)

  • Operates, calibrates, checks and maintains instrumentation. Recognizes and troubleshoots problems with quality control and test procedures and takes appropriate action to ensure quality clinical information. (20%)

  • Communicates with management and coworkers concerning the needs of the laboratory including supplies for efficient laboratory operations. (15%)

  • Serves as a consultant to histology technicians and other health care providers as needed. Provides work direction to the histology technicians, assists with policy and procedure review and accrediting agency requirements. (20%)

  • May mentor students and new employees in laboratory testing following WPAHS policies and procedures. (5%)

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • 4 years’ clinical histology experience required; Depending on location, 1 year of MOHs clinical histology experience may be substituted.

  • HT (ASCP) or equivalent.

Preferred

  • Prior supervisory experience.
