Greater Southern Tier BOCES PROGRAM ASSISTANT in Elmira, New York

Full-time position (1.0 FTE); 7.5-hour day; 12-month position

The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here:

  • Relieves staff professionals of routine administrative duties required for the implementation and coordination of services, programs or departments.

  • Organizes and maintains central filing systems and procedures.

  • Assists in the supervision and implementation of goals and objectives.

  • Confers with supervisors on policy and operation.

  • Expedites and prepares reports.

  • Maintains records.

  • Collects, analyzes and submits to the staff professional statistical and financial data relative to service, program or department needs.

  • Authors correspondence required for the daily operation of the service, program or department.

  • Performs related work necessary for the efficient execution of administrative functions of the department.

  • Carry out all other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

This is a competitive Civil Service position. The selected employee must possess this title or be among the top three of a current, binding Civil Service list for the title or if no binding Civil Service list be in the top three after taking the required Civil Service exam for the title.

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, secretarial science, or a related field and two (2) years of experience in an office setting; OR

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience in an office setting; OR

  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as outlined by the limits above.

NOTE: Successful completion of coursework in computer science, business administration, secretarial science or a related field at a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees, may be substituted for the required experience with 12 credit hours being equivalent to one (l) year of experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of office management; good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; working knowledge of computer software including spreadsheet and word processing; working knowledge of administrative principles and practices; knowledge of policies and program objectives; ability to plan, implement and coordinate activities typically required in program administration; ability to keep records, prepare reports and supervise activities; ability to understand oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships; ability to interact well with individuals or a group; ability to work independently, ability to express self clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; initiative and resourcefulness; responsive to customer needs; good judgment; ability to prioritize and to multitask; ability to meet deadlines.
