Job Description
Under the general administration of the service/division Director, the nurse practitioner is responsible for professional, clinical, educational, supervisory, and administrative activities in connection with the delivery of health care for patients within her/his particular scope of practice.
Under general supervision and in accordance with New York State requirements for written practice protocols and written agreements or for collaborative relationships with qualified physician(s) serves as a licensed, independent practitioner responsible for planning, coordinating, delivering and managing comprehensive health care services to both well and ill infants in a health care setting. Ensures patient and family-centered quality care to improve outcomes and patient experience, in accordance with applicable NYC Health + Hospitals policies and procedures, state and federal rules and regulations and nursing standards of care.
Demonstrates and participates in medical/nursing clinical knowledge, communication and interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism and systems-based practice in caring for the patients and families. Works with administrative, nursing, physician, and affiliate faculty to assure safe, effective, quality patient care and to promote the division’s educational and research missions.
Qualifications
-Masters or Doctorate Degree
-Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a level 3 or 4 NICU or 4 years in a Level 2 NICU
-Current New York State professional nurse registration
-Current New York State nurse practitioner registration, with prescription privileges
-Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA)
-Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
-Medicaid provider number
-DEA number
-Has a collaborative practice agreement with designated protocols filed with NYS Department of Education OR collaborative relationship attestation as per the Nurse Practitioner Modernization Act 2015.
-Basic MS Office Suite experience required
-EPIC (desirable but not required)
Responsibilities
Patient Care
Provides continuous comprehensive medical and nursing care, including preventive and supportive health care services to patients and families.
Manages health problems and coordinates health care for various patient populations.
Identifies and diagnoses illnesses and physical conditions, and implements therapeutic and corrective measures.
Consistent with the established nursing practice, differentiates between normal and abnormal findings in the screening process to detect changes in health status that require physician’s intervention.
Develops and maintains partnerships with community-based organizations and makes referrals to consulting physicians and/or other health care professionals and community agencies, as necessary.
Evaluates and interprets patient data, in order to plan and implement appropriate nursing interventions.
Consults with physicians and other health care practitioners in the evaluation of health screening findings to make prospective decisions about treatment that will best support improved outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Formulates differential diagnosis and the plan of care based on medical history, physical exams, nursing assessment and other pertinent information. Identifies health and medical risks and needs.
Develops, implements, and evaluates patient plan of care. Determines effectiveness and modifies as per clinical standards and practice protocols, where needed, to achieve medical and health goals.
Orders, conducts, and interprets diagnostic and laboratory tests. Identifies and prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions and therapies.
Manages patient care as outlined in practice protocols, and collaborate practice agreement and authorized by Medical Board.
Establishes medical diagnosis as well as nursing diagnosis as a Certified Nurse Practitioner of New York in accordance with Article 139, Section 6902.3.
Maintains accurate, complete, concise and timely documentation in the electronic medical record. Independently Performs procedures pertinent to practice area.
Is a clinical/educational resource person for nursing personnel.
Professional Practice
Participates in development, implementation and evaluation of interdisciplinary Performance Improvement (PI) activities for specialty.
Seeks constructive feedback and takes action to achieve goals identified in performance appraisal.
Provides clinical and didactic instruction to professional staff, students and community groups and conducts in-service educational programs.
Initiates and participates in studies and research related to nursing practitioner services, health care and allied services.
Participates in hospital/nurse practitioner committees.
Provides clinical supervision to Nurse Practitioner’s and students.
Participates with all staff to achieve zero defects goal for Hospital
Governance
Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost in the planning and provision of patient care.
Acts as a liaison between nursing and professional staff assigned to specialty.
Utilizes the Just Culture Algorithm to manage risk and prevent adverse outcomes.
Participates in programs to improve communication, safety and interdisciplinary teamwork.
Participates in the achievement of the Hospital’s Strategic Goals

Evaluates own practice in relation to professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
Maintains clinical competency by keeping abreast of current trends in health care, legislation, regulatory requirements and nursing practice.
