Waste Connections Landfill Lead Operator in Elk Point, Alberta

R360 Canada, an affiliate of Waste Connections, offers a variety of services to clients in the energy, environmental and industrial sectors. These services are delivered via our network of facilities, along with our specialized equipment and assets. We are equipped to process, recover, recycle and dispose of waste and other materials safely and cost-effectively for our customers.

We are currently looking for a Landfill Lead Operator for our Elk Point landfill. This role will be working Monday to Friday, working 40 hours per week. This role does not provide camp or transportation.

Job Purpose

The Lead Operator position is responsible for the day-to-day safe and customer service-oriented operations of the landfill. The Lead Operator will be in constant contact with customers and therefore, must demonstrate excellent communications skills and a high level of customer service. In this role, the Lead Operator will be active in providing proper training to all operators, as such, strong attention to detail is imperative. As this is a safety-sensitive role and due to the nature of working conditions, the Lead Operator is required to be mentally and physically fit to successfully perform the tasks and responsibilities of this role.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

• Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the landfill and for supervising the landfill Operators

• Landfill safety (i.e. ensuring that each operation follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), completion of Safe Work Permits (SWP), Hazard Assessments and Intelex items are entered and closed in a timely manner)

• Assigning roles to each Operator on shift and supervising each Operator’s area in the landfill

• Oversite of scale operations and data entry

• Ensuring received waste meets or exceeds landfill criteria

• General housekeeping (ensuring that the landfill is kept clean and safe)

• Training (ensuring each Operator is training in required areas, should be daily/ongoing)

• Thorough understanding of all regulatory and compliance documents.

• Ensure all required sampling is completed and submitted and that results are acted upon appropriately.

Qualifications/Competencies

The individual in this role will have:

• A High School Diploma, General Education Diploma or equivalent

• A valid and acceptable Driver’s license and successful completion of Pre-employment testing

• Has spent a minimum of 5 years as an Operator in a Landfill and is highly experienced in all processes of the Landfill

• A minimum of 3 years operations experience in waste processing

• Must enroll and complete internal leadership courses.

• A strong attention to detail, communication skills and a profound ability to work long hours in a mentally and physically demanding work environment

• Must be able to document their work and ensure consistent communication with the Site Manager and cross-shift Leads clearly and accurately

• Must be able to multi-task and demonstrate good decision-making skills

• Proven ability to work well under limited amount of supervision

• Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills and safe work practices

• Must demonstrate strong teaching methods regarding all processes in the landfill, including; safety, operations, regulatory, administrative and proper cell construction and maintenance.

• Must demonstrate a high level of integrity and accountability as the Lead Operator will be responsible for managing the landfill in the absence of the Site Manager

• Ensure consistent and clear communication with the Site Manager and other Leads
