SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Family Medicine Physician Assistant functions as a member of a multidisciplinary heath care team to provide comprehensive primary care of patients in collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, and other health care professionals.
Follows established standards, procedures, and practices, and gives specific patient care directions to nursing and other staff.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
Obtain histories, perform examinations, obtain and/or interpret appropriate diagnostic procedures and relevant laboratory tests.
Formulate a plan of care based on scientific rationale (e.g., standards of care, evidence-based practice guidelines and clinical decision tools) and continually update the plan of care as changes in patients' condition warrants.
Perform duties following established departmental policies and procedures.
Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes, and consult with other specialists as required to ensure optimal patient care.
Recognize common medical problems, their deviations from normal, formulates a diagnosis, and refer when appropriate.
Prescribe, dispense and administer authorized medications through established medical protocols within the practice setting.
Provide preventative health care services as well as arrange consultations and/or referrals for Inpatient or Outpatient duties as assigned.
Educate patients/families regarding strategies for improving self-management of diseases/conditions, adherence to prescribed treatments, and health-related quality of life.
Counsel patient/families to assist them in coping with hospitalization and physical and psychosocial outcomes of disease/conditions to promote optimal level of function and health.
Maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
Monitor and ensure accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
Maintain all required reports, records, statistics, etc. Fosters compliance with patient care and organizational standards and regulatory mandates set by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and other agencies.
Maintain patient confidentiality.
Provide call coverage as assigned.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES - The following duties are considered secondary to the essential duties listed above:
Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings as directed.
Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, conferences, and workshops.
Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS &ABILITIES
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to deal courteously with patients and family members.
Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees.
Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment.
Other Information
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
Licensed as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):
- Experience in primary care
