The Medical Coder-Inpatient assigns current international classification of disease (ICD) diagnosis codes and procedure codes. This role is responsible for assignment of the appropriate Medicare Severity-Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG) for complex, multi-specialty inpatient services. The individual is responsible for querying the provider for additional details, as appropriate, for proper coding assignment. The Medical Coder–Inpatient understands and applies applicable medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, surgical technology, pharmacology and disease processes.
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of the following courses per department procedures, within one year of hire: current international classification of diseases (ICD), health care procedure coding system (HCPCS), and medical terminology.
Preferred/Optional: Associate degree in Medical Billing and Coding, Health Information Management or related field.
Minimum Required: Experience working with medical records, current procedural terminology (CPT) and health care procedure coding system (HCPCS).
Preferred/Optional: Experience in inpatient coding.
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required: Coding certification awarded by the American Academy of Professional Coders, American Health Information Management Association or other approved coding certification program within three years of hire.
Preferred/Optional: Coding certification awarded by the American Academy of Professional Coders, American Health Information Management Association or other approved coding certification program at time of hire.
