Cornell Cooperative Extension Community Aquaculture Educator - East Meadow, NY in East Meadow, New York

This position will serve as a Community Aquaculture Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County and will be responsible for developing, planning, implementing and evaluating Shellfish Restoration programming and activities. This position will be responsible for representing Cornell Cooperative Extension in the community through participation in tabling events and serving as a subject matter expert when providing technical assistance to community groups, and other public organizations. The Educator will develop and implement community oyster gardening programs and will utilize Cornell University resources to provide technical assistance on aquaculture projects throughout Nassau County. The Educator will work with assigned team members to deliver innovative programs and demonstrations to youth groups, adult programs, and professional organizations and plan and coordinate special events and activities. This position will train volunteers on shellfish restoration efforts and will deliver program content through face-to-face instruction, virtual workshops and webinars, video and audio demonstration, and other online learning platforms, such as the Cornell Distance Learning Center (Moodle). This position will also coordinate assigned administrative aspects of the Program and will assist the Team Leader with marketing efforts for programming. The Community Aquaculture Educator will also be responsible for identifying and assessing educational program needs, developing program goals and objectives, and the evaluation of all program offerings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree.

  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.

  • Valid New York State Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

  • Coursework or experience in aquaculture restoration and teaching to youth and adult audiences.

  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.

  • Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences and work with audiences of all ages.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.

  • Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate educational programs.

  • Strong interpersonal and public relations skills with proven ability to work effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.

  • Basic computer and word processing skills.

  • Physical ability to demonstrate aquaculture education techniques, including: lifting shellfish cages (up to 50 lbs), bending and squatting, and working on floating docks.

  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written and visual channels using traditional methods and educational tools, as well as electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).

  • Ability to utilize program resources from the organization and the community.

  • Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.

  • Lifeguard Certification.

    Responsibilities/Essential Functions

    Program Responsibilities:

    Assessment - 15%

  • Develop methodology to assess the Shellfish Restoration program and ensure that comprehensive program and strategic needs of the Association are being satisfied.

  • Ensure program assessment is aligned with the statewide Plan of Work and the Association Plan of Work.

  • Develop program needs assessment.

  • Apply subject matter knowledge to identify program gaps and emerging needs and make recommendations for programmatic offerings, enhancements or improvements.

  • Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty and program for program assessment guidance.

    Development - 15%

  • Apply subject matter knowledge to develop Shellfish Restoration educational programming, materials and activities to meet identified needs, goals and objectives within the county.

  • Develop Shellfish Restoration educational programs and activities.

  • Structure programs to meet the need of diverse program participants and meet changing local and/or regional issues.

  • Make programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes.

  • Maintain linkages with Cornell faculty and other subject matter specialists for guidance in program development.

    Delivery - 30%

  • Occasional teach existing programming to include, but not limited to: shellfish cultivation and restoration.

  • Deliver high quality educational programming to individuals and groups that address local, regional, and statewide programming priorities.

  • Implement educational programs through face-to-face instruction, virtual workshops and webinars, video and audio demonstration, and other online learning platforms, such as the Cornell Distance Learning Center (Moodle), utilizing established resources and per established program parameters, and apply subject matter expertise to create innovative lesson plans to deliver these educational programs as appropriate.

  • Work to foster acceptance of the Shellfish Restoration program, methods and practices while addressing needs in the agriculture community and considering diverse audiences.

  • Collaborate with community agencies as requested or required to facilitate related programs and activities.

  • Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include face-to-face instruction, virtual workshops and webinars, video and audio demonstration, and other online learning platforms, such as the Cornell Distance Learning Center (Moodle), to promote and deliver program.

  • Serve as subject matter expert in the area of Community Aquaculture to connect staff and clientele.

  • Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

  • Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and Natural Resource Program staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.

    Evaluation - 10 %

  • Develop program evaluation framework and tools based on subject matter knowledge to measure program impacts and gain input/insight for continuous improvement.

  • Interact with program participants, the community, Cornell faculty, and staff to collect evaluation data for improving programs.

  • Analyze and evaluate collected program evaluation data and communicate results and findings.

  • Recommend program changes to strengthen and improve programs.

    Applied Research - 5%

  • Collect and process diagnostic laboratory samples.

  • Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty and program units for guidance in applied research.

  • Communicate social and economic changes to Cornell University specialists that may be studied and/or acted upon.

  • Ensure applied research is within scope of the statewide and Association Plan of Work.

    Administrative Responsibilities:

    Direction - 5%

  • Determine program priorities and goals in consultation and collaboration with Program Committee(s), community agencies, and/or other stakeholders.

  • Provide input to the Team Leader for the planning of the program budget.

  • Assist with development of marketing and promotion of resources through public relation initiatives and networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational and agricultural organizations.

  • Initiate and develop grant or other funding proposals in order to secure ongoing or new funding to support and enhance educational program offerings.

  • Assist in identifying, developing, and securing community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement, including grant funds for program development and expansion.

  • Assist in developing and/or enhancing/expanding relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, industries and community leaders for the program.

    Management - 10%

  • Manage administrative and program activities, as required.

  • Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise within the program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.

  • Manage and allocate program resources needed to carry out program priorities and goals in consultation and collaboration with Team Leader, Program Committee(s), community agencies, and/or other stakeholders.

  • Monitor program to ensure compliance with policies and objectives of the Association, funding requirements, and adherence to Association strategies/Plan of Work.

  • Effectively manage and allocate financial resources to accomplish program objectives. Assist with identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the Association.

  • Provide oversight to volunteers as assigned and in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Manage DEC permits and adhere to the EPA Quality Assurance Protocol.

    Coordination/Operation - 5 %

  • Deliver a volunteer training program to community members and organizations and provide support in fostering collaborative community projects.

  • Apply established subject matter expertise to assist with updating fact sheets, pamphlets, and webpages, and relevant educational resources as needed.

  • Utilize existing program materials to recruit the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the Community Aquaculture programs.

  • Organize and coordinate Community Aquaculture program activities to support delivery of established program goals.

  • Submit accurate program related expense receipts in a timely manner.

  • Provide administrative support for the Community Aquaculture Programs including, but not limited to: preparing correspondence, maintaining files, maintaining participant records, etc. ensuring confidentiality of all information.

  • Assist in providing marketing materials in the promotion of Community Aquaculture programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative.

  • Submit appropriate grant or other funding proposals, including financial documentation that may be required.

  • Complete reports, as requested.

  • Accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.

  • Provide existing information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, etc.

  • Transport program materials and resources necessary for performing position responsibilities.

  • Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.

    Professional Improvement - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

    POSITION DETAILS:

    This is an exempt, full-time position, 100% FTE. The annual salary for this position is $62,400.00 . This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance and NYS retirement.
