Position Summary

The Department of Entomology at Michigan State University invites applications for a full‐time, 12-month fixed-term Academic Specialist with a 95% teaching assignment, including curriculum development and advising, and 5% research. The position start date is anticipated to be 1 July 2024. Funding is available for this position for up to three years with the expectation of renewal beyond this period based on program performance.

The Entomology Department seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated educator to teach undergraduate courses in applied entomology, with a focus on plant pest biology and management. This position will work closely with teaching faculty within the Entomology Department, theCenter for Integrative Studies (https://cisgs.natsci.msu.edu/) in General Sciences (CISGS), andInstitute of Agricultural Technology (https://www.canr.msu.edu/iat/) (IAT) to deliver courses offered to both science and non-science majors. Initial teaching expectations will include courses in Turf Entomology (ENT264, serving both IAT and 4-year students and taught during Fall Semesters), Integrated Pest Management (ENT478, taught during Spring Semesters), Organic Pest Management (ENT479, taught during Fall Semesters), and ISB201: Insects, Globalization, and Sustainability (within CISGS, taught during Fall Semesters). The successful candidate will also be encouraged to develop a hands-on field techniques course which could be offered during the summer and contribute to scholarship of teaching and learning activities in collaboration with faculty in Entomology and other departments.

We are particularly interested in entomologists with a desire to engage with our growing team of faculty and students focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning who utilize insects in their formal and informal teaching activities.

A demonstrated record of excellence in instruction relevant to the position. Strong commitment to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and the broader academic community. Ability to effectively communicate entomological and biological concepts to non-science majors and early career college students.

Desired Qualifications

A PhD degree in Entomology or a related field. Instructional experience in similar courses. Applied entomology research or extension experience or similar experience in agricultural industry. Interest or experience in scholarship of teaching and learning.
