Position Summary

The Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University invites applications for a Fixed Term Research Associate. The position start date is anticipated to be August 15, 2024. This Postdoctoral Fellow will work closely with Dr. Elizabeth Perry and collaborators on a variety of research related to protected areas and outdoor recreation management. In particular, this person will assist with a large project pertaining to the social impacts of mountain biking across the rural Northern Forest. This and other projects will include primary and secondary data collection, synthesis, and reporting; working within teams of scientists, managers, and students; and communicating across audiences and formats. Leadership opportunities, skills development, and educational engagements will be available.

Doctorate

Minimum Requirements

An earned PhD in Recreation, Tourism, Protected Areas, Horticulture, Agriculture, Natural Resources, or similar.

1) Knowledge/experience in a variety of protected area/outdoor recreation social science research, including a breadth of data types (i.e., qualitative, quantitative, mixed, and/or multi- methods) and reporting formats. 2) Experience working with diverse communities of practice and/or place in research, consistently upholding values of justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access. 3) Familiarity with common data analysis programs (e.g., SPSS, NVivo). 4) Strong written and oral communication skills, such as with sharing research in journal articles, technical reports, workshops, and/or conferences.

Desired Qualifications

1) Advanced knowledge and application of GIS-related techniques. 2) Experience leading a research project from inception to completion, including primary data collection/fieldwork. 3) Enthusiasm for applied and interdisciplinary social science in outdoor recreation settings with community engagement components.
