Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according toU.S. News & World Report.

Purpose:

The Mechanical Engineer will serve as technical expert and provide guidance for FRIB systems.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Review designs and monitor the installation of mechanical utility systems.

  • Oversee and continuously improve the Mechanical Safety Program.

  • Coordinate and conduct design reviews and pressure safety reviews.

  • Provide strategic advice and planning for mechanical utility systems.

  • Review documentation and work plans for code compliance and safety.

  • Establish mechanical design standards to be used by technical divisions.

  • Drive the usage of and assist with FMEAs.

  • Provide oversight of the fire alarm system.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical utility systems and mechanical code authority.

  • General knowledge of mechanical safety programs and ability to coordinate and review programs.

  • Knowledge of and strict adherence to safety programs, OSHA, and all related rules, regulations, and procedures that apply to this position’s responsibilities.

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with processes.

  • General knowledge of particle accelerators and supporting systems such as vacuum, low-conductivity water, and cryogenics.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population verbally and in writing.

  • Working knowledge of mechanical codes and standards, including ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and piping codes.

  • Ability to problem-solve and demonstrate sound critical thinking skills.

  • Ability to collaborate with others and work effectively in a team environment.

  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, with all audiences.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in physics, electronics, mechanical and/or electrical drafting, fabrication techniques, heat transfer, cryogenics and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • Five years of industry and/or military experience

  • Five years of project management experience

  • Record of accomplishment in field of expertise

  • Over five years of experience in the analysis, design, or installation of mechanical utility systems

  • Experience working with particle accelerators and supporting systems such as vacuum, low-conductivity water, and cryogenics

  • Experience using mechanical codes and standards, including ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and piping codes

  • Professional Engineering Licensure
