Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Residential Care and Community Expectations is responsible for the oversight and coordination of all aspects of the Residence Education and Housing Service's (REHS) residential care and community expectations unit, including student support as well as residence hall student conduct programs.  In addition to managing housing conduct and collaborating in the timely and effective implementation of the university student conduct program, this position also serves as a key team member in providing case management and assistance for students in distress and crisis.  This position provides training programs for the Residence Education team, facilitates sensitive issue reporting and response, delivers educational programming, and participates in committees that address policy issues, risk management, and student behavior.  This position serves as the department's lead on the writing of such reports as Clery, Campus Drugs and Alcohol, etc.

The Assistant Director of Residential Care and Community Expectations also works collaboratively with campus departments and programs including the Office of Student Support and Accountability, Office of Civil Rights, Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety, Athletics, University Health and Wellbeing, academic colleges, and others as necessary to oversee the development, implementation, and coordination of strategic efforts aimed at creating an inclusive residential environment and assure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements, including the Jeanne Clery Act.

This position is situated within the Residence Education unit and supports a comprehensive on-campus housing operation with over 15,000 residents, more than 350 resident assistants, and more than 45 full time staff.  Residence Education and Housing Services team members are committed to creating equitable and exceptional experiences one connection at a time.  

Responsibilities include:

Oversee and coordinate all aspects of the University's residence hall conduct system including implementing effective training programs for Residence Education team.

Supervise the Residential Student Conduct Administrator and Residential Student Care Coordinator

Oversee on-campus case management and assistance to students in crisis, stress, and distress.  Participate in training and serve as a representative on the campus Care and Intervention team as requested

Work to improve office efficiency using technology, assessment, and data management systems.

Serves as a resource person for students involved in disciplinary procedures

Helps coordinate support for students in crisis, stress, and distress

Responsible for educational programming and participating on committees addressing policy issues, risk management, and long-term planning around these issues.

Responds to emergency situations as needed

Meets regularly with student behavior partners including MSU Department of Police and Public Safety, Health and Wellness, Athletics, Office of Student Support and Accountability, and the Office of Civil Rights

Serve as the department's lead person on the writing of such reports as Clery, Drug Free Schools Biennial report, etc.

Provide statistical analysis, produce reports, and distribute general information on student behavior in the residence halls.

Oversee annual and ongoing reviews of the residence hall handbook

Trains REHS team members regarding conduct process, emergency situations, crisis management, principles of due process, and compliance

Maintains confidential student conduct records in accordance to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Michigan State University Record Management Services Office
