Position Summary

The Department of Art, Art History and Design in the College of Arts & Letters at Michigan State University invites candidates to apply for the tenure-stream Assistant Professor position in Sculpture. This role is the culmination of our five-year Critical Race Artists Residency, generously supported by an endowment from the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union. . The position is expected to commence on August 16, 2024.

The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic faculty of artist-designers-scholars-educators dedicated to fostering flexible, innovative, and enlightened explorations of the transformative power of art across diverse cultures. We are committed to embracing a wide array of material, technical, philosophical, and critical influences that push the boundaries of contemporary art. Our primary goal is to continuously cultivate an educational environment rooted in empathy and emotional intelligence, fostering the growth of individual artists. We place a strong emphasis on artists whose work addresses pivotal issues, such as racism, post-colonialism, Diaspora, forced migration, economic and environmental injustices, and the profound impact of identity, sexuality, and gender across traditions. We welcome applicants whose creative research in sculpture is defined broadly and fluidly. We encourage exploration across a range of possibilities, from traditional material-based practices to spatial poetics, installation, performance, film, digital media, web-based technologies, interpersonal and socially engaged practice, and more.                                   

The successful candidate will lead the AAHD Sculpture area, providing stewardship and envisioning new initiatives within our sculpture facilities, which include foundry, woodworking, and welding studios. Collaboration with the Ceramics and Electronic Art and Intermedia areas, as well as across the four areas of study in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design (Apparel and Textile Design, Art History, Graphic Design, and Studio Art) is encouraged to support cross-disciplinary programming. The lead faculty in Sculpture will work in partnership with area fixed-term faculty and technicians to enhance facilities and support further initiatives in sculpture. The standard workload for this appointment is 40% research, 40% teaching, 20% service. Essential responsibilities of this position include conducting and disseminating personal creative research, teaching two courses per semester in fall-spring, contributing to our MFA program, and actively participating in departmental, college, and university service.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should hold an MFA, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in sculpture or a related discipline and have experience teaching at the college level, as well as an established record of creative practice.
