Position Summary

The MSU School of Social Work is dedicated to educating students for ethical, competent, responsive, and innovative social work practice, and to conducting and disseminating high quality research that improves the well-being of the most vulnerable in society. Our teaching, research, and outreach synergistically promote social justice, positive change, and solutions to the problems facing diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. More than 375 students are enrolled in our CSWE-accredited BASW, MSW, and PhD programs.

Position Description

  • Assigned to the Directors of the Master of Social Work (MSW) and Ph.D. Program.
  • Primary customer service for the school's graduate programs.
  • Oversees general office operations in the graduate office and performs a wide variety of clerical and administrative tasks for the MSW programs based in East Lansing and Statewide Blended along with our Ph.D. program. 
  • Prepares and arranges student materials for admissions decisions, student acceptance packages and the enrollment process.
  • Assists the MSW and Ph.D. Admissions Chair in providing guidance, direction and training related to graduate school and university policies regarding the use of the online admissions database.
  • Serves as a liaison with students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and other important constituents to answer questions on behalf of the MSW and Ph.D. programs.
  • Coordinates, initiates, prepares, processes and monitors admissions reports, schedules and other related items.
  • Maintains academic and personnel files and graduate student database.
  • Compiles information from manual and computerized records for reports and responses to specific requests from the School's Director, Directors of the MSW and Ph.D. programs, and other university personnel.
  • Informs students regarding assistantships, graduation, registration, and university and School policies.
  • Maintains and initiates records of funding awarded to students for assistantships and conference and research fellowships.
  • Oversees the implementation of new material for Graduate Office student handbook.
  • Oversees student employees assigned to the Graduate Office.
  • Performs and assist with other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through the first two or three years of college, such as an associate degree in business, education, higher education, social work, psychology, or a related field which corresponds to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in university/college/academic admissions or related administrative position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience working with graduate admissions process; experience working with curriculum issues as they relate to matriculated students; working knowledge of SIS modernization, SLATE, EBS, eFellowship, Administrative Actions forms; self-starter with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; a creative thinker and problem solver; ability to work on several projects simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment; extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures; experience with software: Word, Access, Adobe Professional, Excel; some college education; college degree preferred; recommended Software: Database, Word, Excel and Adobe.
