Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The mission of the Department of Language and Literature at North Carolina Central University is to engage students in languages, cultures, literatures, linguistics, and writing. We foster students’ analytical and creative thinking, problem-solving abilities, and communication strategies to prepare students for their responsibilities in civic and professional life.

The department offers an English M.A., B.A.s in English, Spanish, and Interdisciplinary Studies, and minors in Spanish, German, philosophy, literature, and writing. We host the Spanish Club, the Ex Umbra literary magazine, the Eagle Creators Society, and several other student clubs and honor societies. Language and Literature faculty contribute to many interdisciplinary initiatives including Women’s and Gender Studies, Global Studies, Service Learning, undergraduate research, and Digital Humanities.

Our Spanish curriculum starts with elementary and general education coursework and continues through advanced undergraduate coursework. The undergraduate Spanish B.A. programs include a degree with licensure and a degree without licensure as well as Spanish and Hispanophone Africana Studies minors.

NCCU, a member of The University of North Carolina System, is the nation’s first public historically black liberal arts college. The campus of approximately 6,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students is located in Durham, North Carolina, a dynamic, diverse part of the state known for its universities and high social capital. The University continues to serve its traditional student body of African Americans while expanding on its commitment to meet the educational needs of a student body that is diverse.

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position is to teach courses in American Literature and First-Year Composition.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Two years university-level teaching experience in Literature and Composition.

Active research agenda that shows promise for future publication.

Minimum Education/Experience

Ph.D. in English or a related field. Two years teaching experience at the university/college level.

Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

None.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Function Instructional

Teach four courses per semester, typically two literature and two first-year composition, depending on enrollment needs and areas of expertise.

Function Research

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Maintain an active research agenda for advancement toward tenure and promotion. This includes scholarly articles and books for publication, as well as conference presentations and external/internal grants

Function Public Service

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Actively participate on department and university level committees as assigned by the Department Chair and College Dean.
