What you will do

The Volvo Trucks North America New River Valley Plant, located adjacent to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, is undergoing major industrial changes to continue to adapt to new truck launches and increasing technology. The NRV Plant is the largest plant globally within the Volvo Group and is home to 100% of all Volvo trucks produced for the North American market.

You will be a part of the development, selection and implementation of new tools and equipment. Lead and mentor tooling engineers from start to finish on challenging projects incorporating virtual manufacturing and advanced manufacturing into each step. Responsible for collaborating globally with peers and colleagues to establish and benchmark ways of working at all manufacturing facilities. Work closely with advanced technologies and define practical use cases for implementation. Be a part of a virtual manufacturing revolution by continuing the digitalization journey within our factory. Generate ideas, promote employee engagement and think outside of the box with an audacious attitude. Carry out any other necessary delegated tasks for the wellbeing of the plant.

Core Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor tool design engineers, providing input and guidance during design projects and the implementation process.

• Drive and implement tooling and equipment changes with a zero disturbance mind-set.

• Creatively implement advanced manufacturing solutions to support the needs from operations.

• Champion the digitization initiative for the NRV plant and work collaboratively with other departments to promote virtual manufacturing.

• Actively participate in all pillars of Volvo Production System. Utilize a structured approach and tools within VPS to identify and implement optimal tooling and equipment solutions.

• In a leadership role drive, coordinate and implement initiatives of the Manufacturing Engineering Department.

• Within your area of expertise coordinate and lead continuous improvement activities.

• Provide local input/ideas to technology roadmap based on local needs, and support the development and implementation in the local plant.

• Actively engage in global technology forums and represent the NRV plant as an expert in technology implementation.

• Identify manufacturing requirements related to tooling in the early phase and ensure they are included in the scope of a project.

• Review design concepts throughout the development of a tooling and equipment project and ensure that manufacturing requirements are met.

• Participate in global network meetings with in depth knowledge of tooling and equipment, requirements, cost information, and business cases for tooling and equipment improvements.

• Establish and maintain the optimum tooling and equipment standards and best practices within competency area.

• Escalate plant needs to the global network and involve in solution development.

• Promote manufacturing safety, ergonomics, and efficiency through implementation of tooling and equipment.

• Active participation in global networks and work collaboratively with others to implement standards for tooling and equipment, and best practices in the plant.

• Develop cost saving proposals and improve productivity.

• Assist with necessary counselling, training, and discipline to obtain the optimum effectiveness of the team.

• Proven ability to react to issues impacting production with a sense of urgency, promptly assessing the issue, developing a feasible action plan, and following it through to successful completion.

• Project management skills and in-depth knowledge of Early Equipment Management.

• Experience in a team-based environment.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Proven ability to review and apply technical specifications and requirements to the tooling and equipment.

• Possesses strong analytical skills and demonstrated focus on process and Lean Manufacturing concepts.

• Knowledge in digital software platforms, CAD software, virtual simulation systems and the ability to quickly learn other hardware/software as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Bachelor degree in Engineering or Science Field

• And/or Equivalent Experience

• Minimum 2 years of Tooling and Equipment Engineering experience.

• Proven experience in taking initiative, driving improvements, taking additional responsibilities, thinking outside the box, going to the extra mile.
