Responsibilities

The internship role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a manufacturing environment, and to support/promote the graduate's career goals through interaction with engineering professionals. Interns participate in professional activities for Volvo New River Valley Plant by working on practical, innovative, and important projects. This Internship provides structured learning experiences where interns and our Engineering professionals work together on projects within their selected organization. The internship allows students to integrate knowledge and skills in a manner that is mutually beneficial to the student and Volvo New River Valley Plant.

The purpose of this position is to provide engineering support to the Maintenance Engineering and Operations department and to provide learning opportunities for Mechanical or Electrical Engineering students, or Engineering Technology students.

Learning Opportunities

  • Review equipment preventative maintenance checks for effectiveness and look for ways to improve the PMs and improve equipment reliability.

  • Review equipment documentation and help with creating and maintaining the equipment library.

  • Review recommended spare parts and help determine stocking requirements and work with our Computerized Maintenance Management System to validate parts.

  • Analyze the criticality of spare parts for equipment and create spare parts ledgers for production equipment and apply Failure Effect Mode Analysis methods.

  • Learn and apply lean manufacturing principals within the maintenance organization.

  • Assist with and create professional and autonomous maintenance calendars.

  • Involvement in creating One Point Lessons as required.

  • Create power point presentations for communication of new project ideas and reports.

  • The student needs to have intermediate Excel skills for Data analysis and creating graphs.

Education Requirements

Required:

  • Must be enrolled and pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering/ Electrical Engineering Technology/ EET/ Electronics Technology, Instrumentation or related engineering program at an accredited school and have completed 30 semester hours of undergraduate studies. 

  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75.

  • Interns may work up to 30 hours per week during the fall semester.

For all intern and co-op positions, the hourly range is set at $16.00 - $46.00. The hourly rate for these roles is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, academic classification, and degree seeking area of study.
