Job Description:

Responsible for coordinating and supervising maintenance tasks performed on facilities and equipment. Maintains production equipment in a manner that meets safety and efficiency standards and ensures minimum equipment downtime. Establishes and maintains preventive maintenance programs and procedures. Oversees mechanics/technicians who repair and maintain equipment. Administers training programs to ensure proper operations, preventive maintenance, and repair programs and procedures. Maintains inventory of spare parts. May coordinate work performed by outside contractors.

Job Duties:

  • Directs and coordinates activities of maintenance workers engaged in the upkeep and improvement of plant equipment and facilities, in keeping buildings and grounds in a clean and orderly condition, and in maintaining and repairing utility systems and physical structures of buildings.

  • Ability to read blueprints & wiring diagrams for the installation & repair of equipment and the facility.

  • Proven comprehension and abilities to program, troubleshoot and maintain Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) analog/digital electronic control systems, HMI systems and computer network communications.

  • Major electrical repairs including 3-phase, 440 & PLC, new installations of equipment, replaces and tests electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances.

  • Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment using testing instruments such as ammeter, ohmmeter, voltmeter, testing lamp, or growler.

  • Repairs, calibrates and cleans all instruments, pressure switches, to insure minimal downtime and efficient utilization of pneumatic and electronic equipment.

  • Reviews daily maintenance, repair, servicing and installation needs and requirements at the plant assigns sufficient manpower to respond to such needs.

  • Ensures electrical work maintains the integrity of OEM requirements.

  • Trouble-shoots any maintenance, repair or service problems as necessary, and initiates corrective action to resolve problems.

  • Designs and supervises implementation of formal preventive maintenance programs.

  • Maintains plant security and equipment safety and insures that equipment and facilities conform to insurance carrier safety requirements and environmental regulations as cost effectively as possible.

  • Lean Manufacturing experience preferred

  • Takes a physical inventory of all maintenance tools, supplies, repair parts, etc. as required; orders tools, parts and supplies accordingly.

  • Assists in the evaluation and selection of new equipment and machinery; prepares plant layouts and supervises transportation, installation and start-up of new equipment and machinery.

  • Keeps abreast of new production techniques and machinery developments in the paperboard packaging industry, and recommends to the Plant Engineer and Plant Manager changes (i.e., machine modifications, etc.) to improve quality, efficiency and overall profitability of operations.

  • Conducts energy audits and directs energy management programs.

  • Assigns, directs, assists and counsels hourly employees to achieve maximum effectiveness, delegating responsibility and authority as appropriate. Motivates, develops and disciplines employees as appropriate.

  • Enforces and communicates safety rules and trains employees to insure safe and efficient work methods; follows up with employee evaluations in written form.

  • Administers company policies and the terms of the labor agreement relative to maintenance activities including scheduling overtime, filling jobs, answering grievances, etc.

  • Maintains positive employee relations through effective communication and leadership.

  • Negotiates prices and coordinates activities with any subcontractors who may be awarded maintenance or plant expansion contracts.

  • Coordinates with other plant supervisory staff to insure responsiveness to maintenance, repair and/or servicing requests and requirements.

  • Enforces specific work practices as required by environmental regulations.

  • Directs and enforces proper housekeeping practices to insure that a clean plant environment is maintained.

  • Performs other similar and related duties as assigned.
