Job Posting Summary
The Director for the Office of Educational Assessment provides strategic leadership in growing the Mercy University culture of educational assessment, research, and evaluation with emphasis on student learning outcomes assessment at the institutional, School, program, and course levels. The Director is responsible for outcomes assessment for all curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs. The Director will partner with the University’s academic and program leadership, the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning, Office of Institutional Research, Institutional Effectiveness, and Student Affairs on the utilization of student learning assessment evidence for continuous quality improvement and innovation.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:
Administrative/Technical/Service
Provides strategic guidance on all issues and activities relating to assessment, research, and evaluation for academic and other administrative units of the University
Oversees the University-wide assessment of student learning and makes recommendations for continuous quality improvement of curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs
Works collaboratively with the Associate Dean for General Education, the General Education Curriculum Committee, and the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee on all matters related to General Education
Collaborates with and provides support to faculty to establish appropriate student learning goals and outcomes at the institution, School, program, and course levels
Assists in development and implementation of assessment activities and plans for co-curricular and extra-curricular programs. Assists in data collection and analysis for these programs
Collaborates with and provides support to faculty as they establish assessment strategies and practices to measure student learning and progress at specific program points, including benchmark assessments, culminating projects, and comprehensive exams for all academic programs
Establishes and advances a holistic assessment approach utilizing data to inform program and course improvement for curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs in alignment with the university mission
Provides ongoing and timely training and support to faculty and staff in areas related to educational assessment
Provides strategic guidance on assessment of prior learning and manages the University’s Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) processes. Serves as Chair of the Life Achievement Committee and manages the portfolio process
Communicates or implements innovative ideas to proactively solve problems and advance supported units
Provides strategic oversight and maintenance of Anthology and other assessment software platforms
Participates in and provides support for various university committees including the Committee on the Assessment of Student Learning (CASL), Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (UCC), Graduate Curriculum Committee (GCC), Institutional and Professional Standards (IPS), General Education Curriculum Committee (GECC), Teaching and Learning Committee (TLAC), and Committee on Institutional Effectiveness (CIE)
Leads efforts with data analysis and support through annual planning and program self-study processes for all academic programs
Creates and disseminates the Mercy University Assessment of Student Learning Annual Report
Participates in the university’s self-study process and activities to reaffirm accreditation
Performs other duties/projects as assigned
Organizational/Managerial
Develops and implements initiatives to build the OEA team, promotes engagement in the University community, and builds positive morale
Provides employees with clear expectations regarding organizational values and desired results, clear and honest performance feedback, suggestions for training and self-development and timely evaluations. Provides mentoring, coaching and training for employees to improve productivity
Conducts regular staff and assessment coordinator meetings and provides training on a regular basis
Collaborates with staff to develop and oversee the Office’s Institutional Effectiveness Plan
Manages time, staff attendance, department budget, and other resources to meet established short- and long-term goals and deadlines
Assesses office operations and policies to continuously ensure optimal productivity and efficiency
Manages the collection and maintenance of accurate program records for grant and university purposes, including support of accreditation, strategic planning, and annual work plans
Ensures clear, timely communications to others (both oral and written), particularly to those who will be affected by change. Listens to others carefully and attentively and encourages collaboration. Builds effective formal and informal communication channels
Maintains confidentiality in the management of information and records
Demonstrates written, verbal and interpersonal ability to work with all members of the university community and external parties as needed to perform responsibilities and resolve difficult situations
Initiates actions that foster understanding and acceptance of organizational change designed to build efficiency, grow student success efforts, and align with University’s objectives and plans
Gathers, analyzes, and publishes appropriate information, and uses the information as improvement benchmarks/metrics
Demonstrates flexibility in the acceptance and completion of work assignments
Maintains a work environment that is marked by respect for others, values inclusiveness and builds workforce diversity, and fosters cooperation and teamwork
Collaborates and cooperates with other managers and departments across the university
Takes initiative in troubleshooting and completing tasks
Accreditation
Supports regional and programmatic accreditation efforts through collaboration with university and school leadership
Supports the University and the Academic Schools in the preparation of reports and proposals related to institutional and professional accreditation
Prepares assessment reports and data for accreditation documentation and other purposes
Educational/Professional Development
Identifies learning strengths and needs. Seeks to learn and continuously develop self by using learning resources
Represents the University’s Office of Educational Assessment at conferences and events
Communication/Relationships
- Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful approach to working with all members of the Mercy University community
Policies and Procedures Compliance
Complies with policies and procedures of the office and the University including but not limited to the University’s Code of Conduct
Identifies and reports gaps in policies and procedures to management
Complies with all required training. Ensures that employees complete all required training Performs all other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience:
Two or more years of experience and training in educational assessment or related field
Experience teaching in higher education
Familiarity with Middle States or other accreditation processes
Expertise in designing and implementing systems and software for direct and indirect measures of student learning, including e-Portfolios. Experience with Anthology platform is preferred
Strong multitasking, prioritization and project management skills
Ability to perform multiple tasks with a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail
Commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace
Quantitative and qualitative research and analytical skills
Strong leadership, interpersonal, written and oral communication, problem-solving, organizational and presentation skills
Detail-orientation, service orientation, and ability to work independently
Education Requirements:
- Master’s degree required; doctorate preferred

The Mercy University Retirement Plan is comprised of two components:
Deferred Compensation Plan
All eligible employees may contribute to the Deferred Compensation Plan on a pre-tax basis upon joining the University.
Defined Contribution Plan
Eligible employees are enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan after two (2) years of full-time employment at Mercy University and receive a semi-monthly contribution from the College, based on age and salary. If an employee is under age 36, they will receive a contribution of 3.3% of their annual salary each pay period. If an employee is age 36 or older, they will receive a contribution of 9% of their annual salary each pay period.
If employed full-time for two (2) or more consecutive years by another institution(s) of higher education (college or university), without an intervening break in service within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment before joining Mercy, please submit a waiting period waiver form to Office of Human Resources. The Defined Contribution will begin as of the first day of the month following receipt of the completed waiver form.
