You must apply through the State of Montana Career site. * * *Special Information: (job demands or physical working conditions) This job requires extensive field work from March-October of each year. This includes travel, overnight camping, poor weather conditions, and long days in mountainous terrain. The applicant should be averse to extreme weather conditions and dense mosquitoes. Field work includes electrofishing with drift boats, tote barges, and backpacks, spawning fish at mountain lakes, collection of eDNA samples, rotenone treatments, and habitat surveys. This position will require the successful applicant to develop and lead rotenone projects and construction projects for fish barriers and stream restoration. This includes permitting, MEPA, Landowner coordination and agreements, Other agency and NGO coordination, and fundraising. The successful applicant is expected to become a licensed piscicide applicator (Department of Agriculture and American Fisheries Certified). (job duration and/or specific work schedule) A typical annual schedule for this position is as follows: March- April: Population Surveys on the Beaverhead, Ruby, and Big Hole Rivers May: Population surveys for grayling and cutthroat trout in the Centennial Valley, Grayling spawning at Big Hole Brood Population June: Grayling spawning of conservation populations in Mountain Lakes, eDNA surveys for recently completed rotenone projects. July-August: Rotenone Projects, Fish Transfers, and other cutthroat trout conservation projects. September-October: Rotenone Projects and Big Hole River grayling sampling November-February: Data entry, Report Writing, Coordination and Planning for future grayling and WCT projects. Dillon (population 9000) is the County seat and major trading area for over 13,000 people in Beaverhead and western Madison counties. It is the headquarters of the Beaverhead-Deer Lodge National Forest, the Dillon Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management, and the University of Montana-Western. Dillon also forms the center of Montana's largest cattle and hay producing areas, and is one of Montana's top agricultural centers. Dillon and Beaverhead County provide abundant outdoor recreational opportunities including world class blue ribbon fly fishing and hunting, trailheads to national forests and wilderness, cross country and downhill skiing, PRCA rodeo weekends, and the Ratpod, an annual road cycling race. The watersheds in and adjacent to Dillon drain the nearby continental divide and seven mountain ranges that include parts of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Job Duties (narrative summary): -Applicant will conduct population estimates of important recreational fisheries in SW Montana (Beaverhead, Ruby, Big Hole rivers).This technician will be expected to coordinate and oversee monitoring crews associated with upcoming research on the declines of brown trout in the rivers of SW Montana.* *-Applicant will work throughout Region 3 to achieve all goals and objectives of the Upper Missouri River Arctic Grayling Conservation Strategy. This includes all spawning activities for the Centennial and Big Hole Brood populations, population monitoring in the Centennial and Big Hole valleys, Spawning substrate surveys, creation of new brood populations, and introductions of grayling into previously occupied habitat. Nearly all work on Big Hole River grayling occurs on private property and requires communication with landowners. * *- Applicant will work throughout Region 3 to achieve all goals and objectives of the Upper Missouri River Westslope Cutthroat Trout Conservation Strategy. This includes genetic monitoring and coordination, fish removal projects with rotenone, repopulation plans, spawning for new introductions, wild fish transfers. The technician is expected to coordinate and develop rotenone and construction projects from beginning to end. This includes fundraising and project planning with NGOs (e.g., Trout Unlimited), conservation districts, federal agencies, and private landowners. Minimum Qualifications: · Education: o Bachelor’s degree in fish biology, fish and wildlife management, ecology, biology, or a related field. · Experience: o The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and three years of progressive job-related experience closely related to fish and wildlife biology. /Combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis./ Special Requirements: o Background Check o Valid Driver’s License Title: Fisheries Technician 5 Location: Dillon Requisition ID: 24142530
