Description

Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for planning and executing special grounds and maintenance projects. Assists in coordinating the activities of a large group of employees engaged in park maintenance activities over a city-wide area.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities ( may perform other duties as assigned )

  • Coordinates district grounds maintenance activities of a large group of employees engaged in regular and special projects.

  • Performs field surveys and inspections as an investigational advisor to superior and resolves administrative, operational , and public relations problems.

  • Inspects various projects in process, ensures that they are being carried out according to plans , and advises district supervisors on special problems.

  • Arranges for the assignment or transfer of workers, material , and equipment from one district to another for completion of special projects.

  • Prepares new work schedules and cost estimates.

  • Evaluates and reports on the performance of material, equipment and personnel.

  • Ensures that the application of pesticides conforms to pertinent safety regulations.

  • Develops and implements policies and standardized procedures.

  • Consults with divisional staff on the preparation of plans and suggests changes or revisions of such plans.

  • Coordinates the arrangement of equipment and assignment of drivers and maintenance personnel for special recreation events on a city wide basis.

  • Recommends purchase of new types of maintenance equipment and prepares specifications for materials and supplies.

  • Oversees and assists in developing in-service training programs for grounds maintenance employees.

  • Oversees the testing and development of new materials and procedures, and when approved oversees the implementation on a city-wide basis.

  • Assists in budget preparation pertaining to grounds maintenance activities.

  • Prepares special reports on work activities, distribution of personnel and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

  • High school graduation or G.E.D.

  • Three (3) years of experience in the care and maintenance of grounds including two (2) years which has been in a supervisory capacity.

  • Employees in this class must possess a valid State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicators Certification with Category 6.

  • Valid State of Michigan Operator License is required .

  • Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
